PUTRAJAYA, May 11 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today stressed that science, technology and innovation (STI) must become the main driver of Malaysia’s economic transformation in facing growing global financial uncertainties and geopolitical challenges, including the post-conflict energy crisis in West Asia. Anwar said every aspect of planning and implementation related to STI development must be mobilised in a more strategic and effective manner to ensure the country remains resilient amid an increasingly fragile global economic chain. He said the MADANI Government remains fully committed to strengthening the national STI ecosystem through several mission-based initiatives aimed at optimising resources, stimulating sustainable economic growth and accelerating the development of high-value technologies and innovations. According to the Prime Minister, the approach is crucial in reinforcing strategic synergy between the government, private sector and research and development (R&D) institutions to ensure research outcomes can be translated into tangible benefits for the people and the nation. “Science, technology and innovation must not remain within laboratories or policy documents alone, but must be transformed into practical solutions that strengthen the economy, create quality jobs and improve the people’s well-being,” he said. Anwar said this while chairing the National Science Council (MSN) Meeting No. 1 for 2026 today. Students Must Lead Unity, Reject Racist Politics – PM Anwar Ibrahim

KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on students to continue playing a vital role as agents of change capable of driving national progress through knowledge, strong values and maturity of thought yesterday. Speaking at the Prime Minister’s Friendly Ceremony with Indian students at the University of Malaya, Anwar said the younger generation represents a new source of strength that can unite Malaysians regardless of race, religion or background. He stressed that students must reject narrow racist politics that only creates division and threatens national harmony, while urging them to dismantle the walls of racial politics in order to build a more united, stable and progressive Malaysia. “The future of Malaysia depends on the courage and willingness of the younger generation to reject divisive politics and champion unity for the betterment of the country,” he said. Anwar also reaffirmed the MADANI Government’s commitment to defending the principles of social justice and ensuring the welfare of all Malaysians regardless of race or background. According to him, the Malaysia MADANI concept places strong emphasis on compassion, justice and inclusivity across racial and religious boundaries. ASEAN Must Remain United in Facing Global Crises – PM Anwar Ibrahim

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed Malaysia’s strong commitment to strengthening ASEAN unity in addressing increasingly complex global challenges, particularly geopolitical crises that have directly impacted energy security, food security, and the stability of regional supply chains. Speaking at the 48th ASEAN Summit today, he stressed that no country could confront the ongoing global uncertainties alone, underscoring the need to further reinforce collective cooperation and regional solidarity within ASEAN. Anwar said Malaysia also expressed support for accelerating the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, strengthening regional petroleum security mechanisms, and expanding strategic cooperation networks, including through ASEAN-GCC-China collaboration, to ensure long-term energy resilience. On food security, he said ASEAN must take more decisive action through the coordination of emergency food stockpiles and the strengthening of the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) mechanism to shield the region from food inflation and supply disruptions. PM Anwar Ibrahim, Singapore PM Lawrence Wong Strengthen Strategic Cooperation on Economy, Energy and Regional Stability

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic bilateral cooperation aimed at safeguarding mutual interests, regional stability and the prosperity of the people of both countries. During a bilateral meeting yesterday, both leaders discussed several key areas of cooperation, including efforts to accelerate the implementation of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and ensure the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project becomes operational by the end of 2026. CEBU, May 8 — Anwar Ibrahim yesterday reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to enhancing regional cooperation through the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), describing the platform as a strategic mechanism to bridge development gaps and expand economic opportunities across the region. Speaking at the Special BIMP-EAGA Summit in Cebu, the Prime Minister said the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035 must be driven by a spirit of solidarity, sustainable governance and a strong commitment to ensuring that remote and less-developed regions are not left behind in the development agenda. Anwar stressed that the regional cooperation framework plays a vital role in strengthening trade networks, attracting investments, improving digital connectivity and enhancing food security for the benefit of communities across ASEAN. PM Anwar Arrives In Cebu For 48th ASEAN Summit

CEBU (Philippines), May 7 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived here today for a two-day visit to attend the 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings. A special aircraft carrying Anwar and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, landed at the Brigadier General Benito N. Ebuen Air Base here at 1.50 pm, which is the same time as Kuala Lumpur. They were welcomed by the Philippines’ Department of Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin, Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro and Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Cynthia King-Chan. Also present was Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines Datuk Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino Anthony. Anwar was also greeted by a guard of honour led by Brig Gen Joseph Archog, Wing Commander of the Philippine Air Force’s 220th Airlift Wing and welcomed by a troupe of traditional dancers at the airport. Upon arrival, Anwar will participate in the Special Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit, to be held on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit, where discussions will focus on sub-regional development. Later, he is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Laos and Singapore, before attending the BIMP-EAGA leaders’ dinner hosted by Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and his wife, Louise Araneta-Marcos. On May 8, Anwar will attend the opening of the 48th ASEAN Summit. He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his Vietnam and Thailand counterparts thereafter. He will later join a gala dinner hosted by Marcos and his wife before returning home. In a statement yesterday, the Foreign Ministry said the summit serves as an opportunity for Malaysia to share and exchange views on various issues on ASEAN Community building and the way forward.  Discussions will also focus on the impacts of the crisis in West Asia on the Southeast Asian region, ASEAN’s response towards ensuring regional energy and food security, as well as the safety of the bloc’s nationals in the affected areas. The Philippines took over the ASEAN chairmanship from Malaysia on Jan 1, 2026.  Themed “Navigating Our Future, Together,” the republic, during its tenure, seeks to steer ASEAN’s priorities through three pillars: Peace and Security Anchors, Prosperity Corridors, and People Empowerment.

Unity Government focuses on maintaining political stability, people’s welfare

SEREMBAN: The Unity Government will continue to focus on three main thrusts, namely maintaining political stability, driving economic prosperity and safeguarding the welfare of the people, said Pakatan Harapan (PH) Secretary-General Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said this principle is also the basis of unification in the Unity Government and has been proven in its implementation over the past three years. "This government was formed based on mutual trust and respect. These two political values, trust and respect, are why I am impressed with Tok Min (Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun) who managed to maintain his victory in Negeri Sembilan and govern successfully," he said when speaking at the PH Main Leadership Inaugural Lecture here last night. Also present were Aminuddin, who is also the Negeri Sembilan PH chairman, Amanah president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke. Saifuddin Nasution said he also has confidence in the continuity of the current leadership, with the current term remaining for less than two years. "We place strong confidence in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, we want him to continue for the remaining term and if asked what PH's direction is, we want to strive to govern for a second term and Anwar to lead as Prime Minister for a second term." "We want the state to be stable so that the country is also stable. This is important to ensure that the administration of the Federal Government under the leadership of Datuk Seri Anwar can continue," he said, urging all elected representatives and party machinery to continue to focus on their respective duties, especially in resolving the people's issues and ensuring that the administration runs smoothly. Meanwhile, Aminuddin said his party would continue to provide commitment in ensuring that the state government's development and economy were on a stable, structured and continuous path for the well-being of the people. He said that despite the political crisis in the state, the state government's priority was to ensure that the welfare of the people was always maintained, including paying attention to aspects of education, economic stability and efforts to attract more investment.
