Dewan Rakyat Passes Competition (Amendment) Bill 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 -- The Dewan Rakyat today passed the Competition (Amendment) Bill 2026 with amendments at the committee stage. The bill was passed by a majority voice vote after Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali tabled a minor amendment to Clause 22. He said the amendment was made to correct a typographical error in paragraph (f) relating to a reference to the subsection which has been renumbered. On Thursday, 18 MPs took part in the debate on the bill, which was subsequently passed at the policy stage. The Competition (Amendment) Bill 2026 seeks to strengthen enforcement against anti-competitive practices in response to the growing use of technology in cartel activities and the abuse of dominant market positions. The 34-clause bill also seeks to amend Section 24 by introducing a criminal offence for attempting to destroy, conceal, mutilate or alter records and data to obstruct investigations by the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC). -- BERNAMA

SUHAKAM Act Amendment, Inflation-cost Of Living Gap Among Key Focus In Dewan Rakyat

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 -- Proposed amendments to the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) Act 1999 and the gap between the inflation rate and the cost of living are among the key focus in the Dewan Rakyat today.  According to the Order Paper on Parliament’s official website, during the question-and-answer session, Teresa Kok Suh Sim (PH-Seputeh) will ask the Prime Minister whether the government plans to amend the SUHAKAM Act to allow the commission to generate additional income through training programmes and courses, so that it will no longer be fully dependent on government allocations.  Another key question comes from Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok) to the Economy Minister regarding the government’s assessment of the gap between the official inflation rate and rising living costs, as well as the indicators used to ensure economic growth translates into improved household purchasing power.  During the same session, V. Ganabatirau (PH-Klang) will ask the Prime Minister on the status of the review of land transfers or changes in land use involving flood retention ponds, particularly in Kuala Lumpur.  Meanwhile, Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) will ask the Higher Education Minister to state the ratio of students in higher education institutions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields compared to non-STEM fields, as well as the target number of engineers in various disciplines to meet the demands of high-technology industries.  Also scheduled is the tabling of the Cybercrime Bill 2026 for second reading by a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.  The Second Meeting of the Dewan Rakyat for the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament convenes for 16 days until July 16.  -- BERNAMA

Second session of the Dewan Rakyat begins Monday, several important bills in focus

KUALA LUMPUR, JUNE 20 -- The Second Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 15th Parliament, which begins this Monday, will focus on the tabling of several major bills, including the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 to limit the Prime Minister's term of office to 10 years, which will be re-tabled. The conference, which will last until July 16, is also scheduled to re-table the Constitution (Amendment) Bill (No. 2) 2026 which aims to separate the roles of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor. Both bills were previously tabled at the First Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 15th Parliament. However, the bill relating to the Prime Minister's term limits did not obtain the support of two-thirds of the Dewan Rakyat members, while the bill on the role of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor has been referred to the Dewan Rakyat Special Select Committee, to provide space for all relevant parties to refine and examine it. Also of interest is the Cyber ​​Crime Bill 2026, in addition to the Road Transport Act (Amendment) Bill 1987 which is scheduled to be tabled on the first day of the session and will be debated the following day. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the proposed amendments, which include 11 scopes of amendments and 42 clauses, focus on action against illegal racing activities which are still a serious threat to the safety of road users. "The amendment also includes stricter measures to combat tonto activities and strengthen enforcement aspects in an effort to improve road safety and ensure more effective compliance with the law," he said recently. Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun

PUTRAJAYA, May 21 -- Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun has confirmed that no by-elections will be held for the Pandan and Setiawangsa parliamentary seats yesterday. He said the matter was based on Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution, whereby Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul had informed the EC that there was no necessity to fill the casual vacancies. “In line with that, no by-election for the P.100 Pandan and P.118 Setiawangsa parliamentary constituencies will be held,” he said in a statement today. He said the EC received notification from Johari through a letter dated today regarding the status of the two parliamentary seats after they were declared vacant under Article 51 of the Federal Constitution. On Sunday (May 17), Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who is also a former PKR deputy president, and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, a former PKR vice-president, announced that they would vacate their parliamentary seats on Monday and leave the party effective Tuesday through letters submitted to the party secretary-general.
