Two factories, a workers’ dormitory in Juru destroyed in fire

BUKIT MERTAJAM -- Two factories and a workers' dormitory were destroyed in a fire in Lorong Industri Ringan 4, Juru Light Industrial Area, here yesterday. Assistant Director of the Fire and Rescue Operations Division of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) in Penang, John Sagun Francis, said his department received an emergency call regarding the incident at 8.25pm. "Eight people who were in the factory and dormitory managed to escape, consisting of one Myanmar and one Vietnamese worker each, as well as two local workers and three Nepalese workers," he said in a statement today. He said the fire was completely extinguished at 10.22pm before the operation ended two hours later after his team ensured that there were no embers or the spread of fire there. According to him, 30 officers and firefighters from three fire stations and rescuers were involved in the firefighting operation and were also assisted by more than 100 people from 17 Volunteer Fire Departments. -- BERNAMA

Teenage Girl Missing While Hiking In Tanjong Malim

IPOH, May 23 -- A teenage girl has been reported missing after possibly being lost while hiking at Bukit Changkat Asa near Tanjong Malim today. Perak Fire and Rescue Department operations division assistant director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said they received a call at 1.26 pm and dispatched a team of firefighters to the location. "A girl, Nur Izzati Humaira Azizul, 19, is believed to have gotten lost while descending the hill during a hike with five friends and family members,” he said in a statement tonight, adding that the search began at the last place she was seen. The search and rescue operation was suspended at 7 pm today and would be handed over to the Kuala Kubu Bharu Fire and Rescue Department for further action, he added. -- BERNAMA
