Fruit Trader Drowns During Family Outing At Belukar Bukit Waterfall

KUALA BERANG, May 28 -- A fruit trader drowned while swimming with family members during a picnic at Belukar Bukit Waterfall in Sekayu near here this evening. Hulu Terengganu police chief Supt Sharudin Abdul Wahab identified the victim as Muhammad Zahari Mohd Zain, 26, from Kampung Kelulut, Marang. He said authorities received a report on the incident at 4.22 pm, prompting the Fire and Rescue Department to dispatch a team comprising one officer, three personnel and a fire engine to the scene five minutes later. Initial investigations found that the victim visited the waterfall with 19 family members for a picnic. However, only five of them, including the victim, entered the water while the others remained by the riverbank. “The victim was found unconscious by members of the public at about 5 pm. Medical personnel at the scene later confirmed his death,” he said when contacted today. Sharudin said the victim’s body was taken to the Hulu Terengganu Hospital Forensic Unit for further action. He also advised the public to exercise caution when carrying out recreational activities at waterfall areas due to the current unpredictable weather conditions. -- BERNAMA

Father Charged With Murder of Two-month-old Daughter In Labuan

LABUAN, May 25 -- A 37-year-old man was charged in the Magistrate's Court here today with the murder of his two-month-old daughter at a house in Kampung Bukit Kuda early this month. No plea was recorded from the accused, Azmi Amat, after the charge was read before Magistrate Dr Melissa Chia Pui Fung. According to the facts of the case, the incident came to light after police were alerted by Labuan Hospital at about 2.40 am on May 9 regarding a two-month-old baby girl brought to the hospital, suspected to be a victim of abuse. The infant later died while receiving treatment. A post-mortem examination revealed that the baby had serious head injuries caused by blunt force trauma, as well as several rib fractures. The man was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years and, if not sentenced to death, not fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. The court fixed June 23 for remention. -- BERNAMA

Claims Of Bukit Mertajam Hospital Relocation Untrue – Board Of Visitors

GEORGE TOWN — Claims that Bukit Mertajam Hospital will be relocated to avoid disturbing a temple have been dismissed as false and defamatory by the hospital’s Board of Visitors. In a statement, the board clarified that a visit by Steven Sim in September 2025 focused solely on upgrading hospital facilities and did not involve any temple-related discussions. The board stressed that there are no plans to relocate the hospital, but instead a proposal to construct an additional building to accommodate increasing patient numbers, including those from nearby districts such as Kulim. The project, supported by the Penang state government with the allocation of eight acres of land, is currently undergoing approval by the Ministry of Health Malaysia. The board also warned that the viral social media claims contain elements of racial and religious incitement that could disrupt social harmony, and urged authorities to investigate the source and take appropriate legal action. It reiterated that the hospital serves all communities regardless of race or religion, and that all development plans are aimed at improving public healthcare services.
