KUALA LUMPUR: A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 was detected off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia at 2.52 pm this afternoon. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) in a statement announced that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres (km) with the epicentre detected 128 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Russia. Thunderstorm warning, heavy rain in nine states and KL until 6pm this evening

KUALA LUMPUR, Jun 15 -- The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds in nine states and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur until 6pm this evening. MetMalaysia in a statement announced that the bad weather is predicted to occur throughout the states of Perlis, Kedah involving Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar and Pokok Sena, as well as Terengganu (Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang and Dungun).  Similar weather is also expected to hit Pahang (Raub, Bentong, Temerloh, Bera and Rompin), Selangor (Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Hulu Langat) and Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu, Kuala Pilah, Jempol and Tampin). For Johor, the areas expected to be affected are Segamat, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru. Meanwhile, in Sarawak, the warning covers Sri Aman (Sri Aman), Betong, Sarikei, Sibu (Sibu and Selangau), Mukah, Bintulu (Tatau and Bintulu), Miri (Subis and Marudi) and Limbang. In Sabah, bad weather is expected to occur in the Interior (Keningau and Tambunan), West Coast, Tawau (Tawau, Kunak and Lahad Datu) and Sandakan (Sandakan). -- BERNAMA

PM Anwar Ibrahim: Government Strengthens El Nino Preparedness and Supports Growth of Oil and Gas Industry

PUTRAJAYA, June 12 -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) meeting today reviewed a presentation by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) on the El Niño phenomenon and its potential impact on the country. Anwar said the meeting agreed that METMalaysia should immediately intensify public awareness and outreach efforts by conducting comprehensive briefings across all states. He stressed that preparedness at the grassroots level must also be strengthened, as preventive measures and early planning remain the most effective defense against increasingly volatile and extreme weather conditions. The Prime Minister noted that proactive engagement with state governments, local authorities, and communities is essential to ensure Malaysians are well-prepared to face the challenges posed by climate-related events. During the meeting, MTEN also received a presentation from the Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) on the future direction of Malaysia’s Oil and Gas Services and Equipment (OGSE) sector. Anwar said the government recognizes that the growth and development of businesses and industries are largely driven by the competence, agility, and innovation of industry players. He added that the government will continue to provide clear, conducive, and supportive policies to facilitate sustainable industry growth and strengthen Malaysia’s economic competitiveness. Magnitude 7.9 Earthquake Strikes Mindanao, Tsunami Warning Issued for Coastal Sabah

KOTA KINABALU, June 8 -- A powerful magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck Mindanao in the southern Philippines early Monday morning, prompting tsunami warnings for several coastal districts in Sabah. According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the earthquake occurred at 7:37 a.m. local time at a depth of 50 kilometres. The epicentre was located at latitude 5.7° North and longitude 125.1° East. The strong tremor was reportedly felt in several parts of Sabah, particularly in the east coast districts of Tawau and Semporna. MetMalaysia's analysis indicates that tsunami waves of up to 0.4 metres may affect the coastal areas of Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu. The potential impact period is expected between 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon today. As a precautionary measure, tsunami warning sirens have been activated in all four affected districts, while authorities continue to monitor developments closely.
