Johor Polls: Bukit Batu Residents Want Cost Of Living, Infrastructure Issues Addressed

KULAI, July 2 -- Rising cost of living, better job opportunities and improved infrastructure are among the key concerns of residents in the Bukit Batu state constituency ahead of the 16th Johor state election. Most residents met by Bernama hope that the elected representative and the state government to be formed after the election will prioritise resolving these issues, which they say have a direct impact on their daily lives. Taman Sri Pulai 1 resident Kelvin Chong, 58, said the state government, particularly the Bukit Batu elected representative, should focus on creating more quality job opportunities with competitive salaries to help the people cope with the rising cost of living.  “People are hoping for more job opportunities with better salaries. The cost of living in Johor is getting higher, and prices of goods are also affected by its proximity to Singapore,” said the businessman in the logistics sector. Vegetable and fruit seller Tew Chong, 48, expressed hope that more initiatives would be introduced to reduce production costs in the agricultural sector, allowing crop prices to remain reasonable. He said that the recent rise in the cost of fertilisers, pesticides, labour and transportation had forced sellers like him to increase the prices of vegetables and fruits to cover operating costs. “If production costs are reduced, we don’t have to raise prices significantly. This will also allow consumers to enjoy more affordable vegetables and fruits,” he said. Another resident, Muhammad Yusof Abdullah, 64, said efforts to upgrade infrastructure in the Bukit Batu constituency should be given attention, particularly the maintenance of roads, drainage systems and public facilities used daily by residents. The retiree said the rapid development in the area must be supported by better facilities to ensure the comfort and safety of residents. “For example, along Jalan Sri Putri, there are many potholes and uneven road humps that can cause vehicles to break down. We are also worried that something untoward may happen. If infrastructure can be improved, it will definitely bring more comfort to the people,” he said. The Bukit Batu state seat is witnessing a five-cornered contest featuring incumbent Arthur Chiong Sen Sern of Pakatan Harapan (PH), R. Kumaran (Barisan Nasional - BN), M. Premanand (Parti Ikatan Demokratik Malaysia - MUDA), G. Tamili (Parti Bersama Malaysia - Bersama) and Independent candidate Datuk Kamaruzaman Ali. Johor state election: MUDA bets on Rashifa Aljunied to defend Puteri Wangsa state seat

JOHOR BAHRU, JUNE 20 -- The Malaysian Democratic Alliance (MUDA) has announced Puteri Wangsa State Assembly Service Centre Chief Officer Rashifa Aljunied, 26, as a candidate for the Puteri Wangsa State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seat in the Johor State Election (PRN). The announcement was made by MUDA President Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz, who is also the former incumbent of the seat. "The decision to place Rashifa as a candidate was made after in-depth discussions with the top leadership and party machinery," he said at a press conference announcing the party's candidate for the first series today. Amira Aisya said her decision not to defend the seat was to contest at the Parliamentary level in the upcoming 16th General Election (GE-16). It is understood that MUDA will make a second series of candidate announcements for several more seats in the capital tomorrow. In the 2022 Johor state election, the Puteri Wangsa state seat was the only seat won by MUDA. Amira Aisya won the six-cornered contest in the seat with a majority of 7,114 votes, defeating Barisan Nasional (BN) challenger Ng Yew Aik. The Election Commission has set July 11 as polling day for the Johor state election with June 27 as nomination day and early voting on July 7. -- BERNAMA

Johor state election: BN candidate list being reviewed – Ahmad Zahid

KUALA TERENGGANU: The list of candidates for the Johor State Election (PRN) has been submitted by Johor Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and is currently in the evaluation stage. Deputy Prime Minister and BN Chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the list of candidates that had been submitted to him would be finalised after he held discussions with the leaders of BN component parties. "The candidates are in the evaluation stage, but we must also respect the candidates who come (put forward) from other BN component parties," he said. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said this to reporters after the Closing Ceremony of the Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Economic Convention (KEUB 2026) here today. The UMNO president, who also confirmed that Onn Hafiz would remain the "poster boy" in the state election, said BN was committed to winning more than 40 seats in this state election, surpassing the record achieved in 2022. However, he admitted that no victory can be achieved easily except through hard work, wisdom and an organized machinery. Apart from that, the various initiatives implemented by the Johor State Government under the BN administration for the well-being of the people of Johor are believed to gain the support and confidence of voters in this election. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid dismissed negative perceptions about the relationship between BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) following the decision to contest solo, by emphasizing that the Johor State Government under BN administration was formed before the existence of the Unity Government at the Federal level. "The government in Johor is a BN government, not a Unity Government. The door has been opened by Johor BN for them to contest on a friendly basis in each of the 56 state assembly seats," he said. Yesterday, Onn Hafiz announced the dissolution of the Johor State Assembly after receiving the consent of the Regent Sultan of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail to pave the way for the state election. Onn Hafiz previously confirmed that Johor BN would field candidates in all 56 seats in this state election. In the 2022 general election, BN won 40 seats while Pakatan Harapan (12), Perikatan Nasional (3) and MUDA (1). -- BERNAMA
