Malaysia, Russia Explore Strategic Cooperation to Strengthen Long-Term Energy and Oil Supply

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 – Malaysia and Russia have agreed to explore stronger strategic cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, following discussions between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, both leaders discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation, including opportunities to enhance collaboration in the energy industry, which is considered a strategic area for both nations. The leaders also exchanged views on expanding economic ties and welcomed Russia’s commitment to long-term cooperation in ensuring stable energy and oil supplies. Beyond energy, Malaysia and Russia explored potential partnerships in emerging technologies, cybersecurity, digital development, artificial intelligence (AI), modern agriculture, and the pharmaceutical sector. The discussions further covered initiatives to facilitate the movement of people through visa liberalisation, as well as mechanisms to expand bilateral trade and investment using local currencies, namely the Malaysian Ringgit and Russian Ruble.
