Selangor Mulls Edu-entertainment Status To Reduce Duty On Indoor Playgrounds

SHAH ALAM, June 22 -- The Selangor state government is studying a proposal to reclassify indoor children’s playgrounds as ‘edu-entertainment’ to allow for a reduction in the entertainment duty imposed on such premises.  State Tourism and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said the study was initiated following complaints from operators who are required to pay entertainment duty of up to RM6,390 annually, even though the activities offered include educational elements.  “I take note of the matter. In fact, many engagements have already been held. Since it falls under the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment 1995, it has to be reviewed comprehensively.  “We are also examining the need to introduce a new duty category, namely ‘edu-entertainment’. This would allow us to circumvent constraints under the enactment and reduce the rate,” he said in a press conference at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly building here today.  For this purpose, Ng said Selangor will hold engagement sessions with Penang, as the state has successfully introduced the ‘edu-entertainment’ classification without amending its enactment.  Ng said if amendments to the enactment are required, the process would be time-consuming and involve multiple stages.  Previously, the Malaysian Association of Theme Parks and Family Attractions (MATFA) had urged the Selangor state government to review the proposal to classify children’s playgrounds under the entertainment licence category, as it would lead to a sharp increase in annual licensing fees.  MATFA president Tan Sri Richard Koh said the proposed reclassification would see annual fees increase nearly 13-fold, placing additional financial pressure on operators of children’s playground facilities that provide affordable recreational spaces for families, particularly those in the B40 and M40 groups.  -- BERNAMA

Two Rooms At SK Parit Serong Damaged In Fire

SHAH ALAM, June 22 -- Two rooms at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Parit Serong in Tanjung Karang, near Kuala Selangor, were damaged in a fire shortly after midnight today, but no casualties were reported. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ashrul Riezal Asbar said the department received an emergency call at 12.50 am, and a team from the Tanjung Karang station arrived at the scene at 1.01 am. He said the operation was also assisted by personnel from the Kuala Selangor and Sungai Besar stations, involving a total of 13 personnel and three fire engines. "The fire involved an administration office and the resource unit room measuring 18.3 by 7.6 metres. It was brought under control at 1.13 am," he said in a statement. The cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained, he said. -- BERNAMA

Selangor expands access to affordable healthcare through Selgate

SHAH ALAM, JUNE 20 -- The Selangor State Government continues to expand access to affordable healthcare through a network of hospitals under Selgate Healthcare (Selgate) to help the people cope with rising medical costs and insurance premiums. Selangor Public Health and Environment Exco, Jamaliah Jamaluddin said that Selgate Specialist Hospital Rawang, which was launched last May, is now involved in the Hospital Services Outsourcing Program (HSOP), which allows certain patients to be referred to private hospitals for treatment. He said the move would not only provide patients with faster access to treatment, but also help reduce pressure and congestion at public health facilities. "The Selangor State Government is strengthening collaboration between Selgate with insurance companies, Takaful, third party administrators (TPA) and the corporate sector to ensure that the treatment price structure remains affordable, especially for the B40 and M40 groups," he told Bernama. Jamaliah said that Iltizam Selangor Sihat (ISS) benefit holders can also obtain treatment for illnesses and services covered under the programme through the Selgate ecosystem. He said the integration between Selcare Management Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the state government, and the SELangkah application allows the registration process, verification of eligibility and management of health benefits to be carried out more efficiently. "The state government's goal is to ensure that the people not only receive health assistance, but can access these benefits easily when they need treatment," he said. Meanwhile, the head of the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia, Prof Dr Mohd Arshil Moideen described the affordable private hospital model introduced by Selgate as an intervention measure that has the potential to bridge the gap in people's ability to obtain treatment as medical costs and insurance premiums continue to rise. He said the initiative could also be a short-term solution to help reduce congestion at government hospitals, but more formal integration between the public and private sectors needed to be strengthened to ensure more comprehensive benefits. "Through the targeted service purchasing method by the Ministry of Health (MOH), public funds can be used to finance certain procedures for B40 patients in hospitals such as Selgate, thus helping to reduce congestion in government hospitals more effectively," he said. Mohd Arshil said that the sustainability of the affordable private hospital model in the long term depends on diversifying income sources to face the challenges of global medical inflation and currency weakness. He also suggested the use of high-quality generic medicines to control treatment costs and reduce dependence on imported medicines and equipment. "As a government-linked company (GLC) entity, Selgate can leverage its scale to manage its own pharmacy chain and strengthen its corporate primary healthcare package which is more preventative," he said. Last May, the Menteri Besar of Selangor, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, said the official opening of Selgate Specialist Hospital Rawang was able to accommodate the demand for specialist services in the northern corridor of Selangor, which is currently recording rapid population growth. He said the hospital, with a capacity of 224 beds, would not just meet the needs of private healthcare, but would also be part of the state government's efforts to expand health benefits to the people. -- BERNAMA

Selangor Heritage Body Names Aslynda Mohd Dahlan As New CEO

SHAH ALAM, June 19 -- The Selangor Malay Customs and Heritage Corporation (PADAT) has announced the appointment of Aslynda Mohd Dahlan as its new chief executive officer, effective immediately. In a statement today, PADAT said the appointment is aimed at driving forward Selangor's heritage agenda while cementing the body's role as the state's leading institution for culture, heritage, and museums. It highlighted her extensive track record in public administration, state development planning, financial management, strategic policy development, and corporate governance. "Prior to her appointment at PADAT, she built her career in the Selangor state government, serving in senior roles such as the state treasury's principal assistant financial officer. "She also previously served as the principal assistant director of the sectoral section at the Selangor State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN), which provided her with direct experience and exposure to the development of the state's culture, heritage, and creative industries," the statement read. Aslynda also served as a board member of Wanita Berdaya Selangor (WBS), where she monitored corporate governance to ensure compliance with the standards set by the Selangor state government.
