Steven Sim Praises Yogi B as Global Ambassador of Malaysian Music, Highlights TEKUN Support for Creative Entrepreneurs

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — Minister of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Steven Sim Chee Keong has praised Malaysian rapper Yogi B for elevating Malaysia's presence on the international music scene, describing the artist as a home-grown talent whose work has reached audiences around the world. Sharing his experience after visiting Yogi B's recording studio, Steven Sim said the veteran hip-hop artist has remained relevant since his days with Poetic Ammo, one of Malaysia's pioneering hip-hop groups in the 1990s. He said Yogi B has continued to build a successful solo career, gaining recognition not only in Malaysia but also in India and other countries through his contributions to Tamil music. Steven Sim noted that many of Yogi B's earlier songs continue to enjoy popularity, with the artist still receiving invitations to perform in countries including Singapore, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. "I told him that he is truly a Malaysian product exported to the world," he said. According to Steven Sim, Yogi B has also demonstrated a strong entrepreneurial mindset by operating his own recording studio, managing a record label and planning a new album, with the first song of the project set to be produced in Malaysia to reflect his Malaysian identity. He said producing music capable of competing internationally requires significant investment, with music videos alone costing tens of thousands of ringgit, adding that the creative industry should be recognised as an important economic sector built on intellectual property and entrepreneurship. Steven Sim also revealed that Yogi B recently applied for financing under the SPUMI programme through TEKUN Nasional, with the application approved within days after being submitted on June 26. He said the swift approval demonstrated the government's commitment to providing transparent and efficient support to entrepreneurs without requiring political connections or special privileges. Steven Sim stressed that artists and musicians should be recognised as entrepreneurs because they create intellectual property, manage businesses, employ teams, produce creative works and generate economic value.
