KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 30 — The Sessions Court here today imposed a fine of RM12,000 on a part-time creative worker after he pleaded guilty to creating and initiating the transmission of obscene communications that insulted Islam three years ago.
Judge Muhammad Ilmami Ahmad also ordered Yeo Li Yin, 48, to serve 10 months in prison if she failed to pay the fine.
According to the charge, the woman is accused of creating and initiating the transmission of obscene communications with the intent to hurt others using the Twitter application (now known as X) under the profile name “Liyin Yeo” on June 19, 2023.
The delivery was seen at the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department Office, Wangsa Maju, here at 2.15 pm on June 22, 2023.
The charge was made under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and is punishable under subsection 233(3) of the same act which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding one year or both, if convicted and shall be fined RM1,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nursyuhada Husna Sulaiman requested the court to impose a suitable sentence as a lesson to Yeo and the public not to do things that threaten public order.
However, lawyer Mohd Ruzaini Zulkifli requested a minimum fine on the grounds that his client had repented and regretted his actions and needed to take care of his parents.
“My client promised not to repeat the same mistake and closed the account,” he said.
