SINGAPORE, July 24 2026 — Digital travel platform Agoda has reported a significant rise in accommodation searches for destinations hosting Japan’s major summer fireworks festivals, highlighting growing demand for travel experiences that combine fireworks displays with local sightseeing, cuisine and overnight stays.
Based on Agoda’s accommodation search data for summer 2026, Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture recorded the strongest increase, with searches rising 50-fold ahead of the Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks, one of Japan’s largest and most celebrated fireworks events.
The analysis compared accommodation searches made 90 to 60 days before each festival with searches for check-ins on the day before and the day of the events.
Other destinations also recorded notable increases in travel interest, including Otsu City in Shiga Prefecture for the Lake Biwa Great Fireworks Festival, where searches rose sevenfold. Numazu City in Shizuoka Prefecture, home to the Numazu Summer Festival and Kano River Fireworks Festival, and the Kanmon Straits Fireworks Festival held across Kitakyushu and Shimonoseki, each saw searches increase by nearly 3.5 times.
Meanwhile, Matsue City in Shimane Prefecture, which hosts the Matsue Suigosai Fireworks Festival, recorded more than a threefold increase in accommodation searches.
Agoda said the findings reflect growing interest among both domestic and international travellers in “fireworks travel” — trips that combine festival experiences with visits to local attractions, dining and overnight stays.
Senior Country Director of Agoda International Japan, Tadashi Ikai, said Japan’s fireworks festivals remain one of the country’s signature summer attractions and are drawing increasing numbers of travellers seeking immersive regional experiences.
He noted that the rise in searches for destinations such as Nagaoka, Matsue and Numazu demonstrates a growing preference for exploring local culture, cuisine and scenic attractions beyond Japan’s major cities.
Agoda offers a range of travel services, including hotel bookings, flights, private accommodation and activities, enabling travellers to plan complete itineraries for their summer holidays.
