KUALA LUMPUR — The Ministry of Transport Malaysia (MOT) has begun coordinating with airline companies, airport operators, jet fuel suppliers and aviation authorities to address the impact of rising global fuel prices following tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the immediate priority is to ensure that air cargo services, particularly for essential goods such as food, continue operating despite the increasingly challenging situation, especially ahead of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season.
He noted that airlines are currently facing significant operational pressure as fuel costs now account for nearly half of their total operating expenses, and some carriers may be forced to suspend certain flight operations if fuel prices continue to rise.
According to him, MOT will continue discussions with airport operators and relevant stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of local airline operations.
Airlines will also share operational data with aviation authorities to facilitate more comprehensive risk assessments.
All parties have agreed to hold weekly meetings to closely monitor developments, as the ongoing crisis remains uncertain and may require swift response measures should the situation escalate.
