SEREMBAN 22 August 2026: The impact of the El Nino phenomenon on commodity crop yields, particularly palm oil, is not expected to be immediate and could only become evident several months after the weather event occurs.
Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad said the effects of prolonged hot and dry weather on oil palm trees typically take time to materialise, depending on the severity and duration of the conditions.
She said the ministry was closely monitoring weather patterns and their potential impact on the plantation sector, particularly palm oil production.
Noraini said the government would continue to assess developments and take appropriate measures to minimise the effects of adverse weather conditions on the industry.
Malaysia remains one of the world’s major palm oil producers, making weather conditions an important factor in maintaining production levels and the stability of the commodity sector.
The ministry will continue working with relevant agencies and industry players to monitor the situation and assess any potential impact on palm oil yields.
