KUALA LUMPUR, September 12 2026, Parents should make full use of the parental control functions available on various digital applications to monitor and limit their children’s internet use at home, said Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
He said efforts to create a safe digital ecosystem could not rely solely on authorities such as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), but instead required the active involvement of users and parents.
He said although the government could set age limits and safety guidelines, parents and users still played an important role as the first line of defence in ensuring that children were not exposed to negative content and online threats.
“This is important because to ensure digital safety, it is not enough to rely only on MCMC, the police and the relevant authorities to enforce it. The government and authorities can set certain limits, but ultimately, it is the users who continue to use the internet,” he said.
He said this in his speech at the 2026 Safe Internet Campaign Community Carnival Programme at the Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency level, held at Dataran Pantai Ria here today.
Meanwhile, Fahmi also reminded the public to remain vigilant against increasingly sophisticated cyber scam tactics, including those that exploit artificial intelligence (AI) technology and face filters to deceive victims.
“There are all kinds of applications and ways people will use to convince us that we are talking to someone handsome or beautiful. They want us to fall in love with them. They want us to give them money, and eventually, we lose all sorts of things,” he said.
