RM935 Million Allocated for Tourism and Culture Under Budget 2027

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has allocated RM935 million for tourism and cultural initiatives under Budget 2027 as Malaysia extends its Visit Malaysia campaign into next year.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the allocation would support tourism industry players, improve tourism facilities and promote the country’s cultural heritage.

The funding includes incentive grants for industry players to promote destinations and organise tourism events.

Tourism facilities will also be upgraded, including jetties and heritage sites with potential for recognition by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), such as Danum Valley in Sabah, Bujang Valley in Kedah and Pahang National Park.

The government will also promote arts, culture and heritage through cultural festivals held in conjunction with the SEA Games, while supporting practitioners in traditional crafts, weaving and batik.

Boosting international connectivity
To attract more international visitors, the government will introduce international flight and charter matching grants to establish new direct air routes from China, India, Central Asia and Europe.

The scheme will be expanded to cover cruise ships, ferries and tour buses bringing international tourists to Malaysia.

Higher duty-free shopping limits
Anwar also announced an increase in the duty-free shopping limit for visitors and tourists at the duty-free islands of Langkawi and Labuan to RM10,000, subject to a minimum stay of 48 hours.

More locally made products from Langkawi will also be exempted from import duties to support local entrepreneurs.

To address limited access to automated teller machines (ATMs) on some resort islands, QR code payments will be expanded to 15 locations next year, including holiday islands.

The initiative is intended to help small businesses avoid losing sales when customers have insufficient cash.

Incentives for international events
Anwar said Malaysia must position itself as a preferred destination for major international events.

Rebates will be offered to event organisers holding events at venues with a capacity of at least 10,000 spectators.

Tax incentives for international incentive trips, conferences and trade exhibitions will also be extended until the 2030 assessment year.

The measures are aimed at attracting more international visitors, strengthening local tourism businesses and increasing Malaysia’s competitiveness as a destination for leisure, culture and major events.
