KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged Malaysians to prioritise safety and remain alert as the 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon begins, bringing the possibility of heavy rainfall, flooding and rough seas.
The monsoon is expected to continue until March 2027, with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecasting three to five episodes of prolonged heavy rain between November 2026 and January 2027.
Ahmad Zahid said the heavy rainfall could increase flood risks, particularly in low-lying areas and locations near rivers.
He also warned that strong winds during the monsoon could cause rough seas and rising sea levels in the South China Sea.
Public Urged to Prepare for Emergencies
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Ahmad Zahid advised the public to monitor the latest weather forecasts and official warnings, avoid flood-prone areas and never attempt to cross floodwaters.
He also reminded Malaysians to follow instructions from the authorities, including evacuation orders when necessary.
As part of emergency preparedness, the public was encouraged to keep important documents, medication, essential supplies and emergency contact numbers readily available.
Ahmad Zahid stressed that personal and family safety must remain the top priority throughout the monsoon season.
The public is urged to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions to reduce risks associated with flooding and other weather-related emergencies.
