BOGOTA, Oct 27 2026, At least six people have been killed in an attack in a rural area of southwestern Colombia, according to local media reports.
The attack took place in Suaza municipality, in the Huila department. Authorities are investigating whether it was linked to alleged extortion demands.
Colombian human rights organisation Corporation for Peace and Social Development (Corpades) said the motive has not yet been confirmed.
Vehicle Set Ablaze in Attack
Videos shared by local media and social service organisations showed a vehicle carrying five people being set on fire at the scene.
A shootout also left another person dead, bringing the reported death toll to six.
However, the circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear. Authorities are working to verify the number of victims and identify those responsible.
Similar Attack Reported Nearby
The latest incident occurred a day after another attack in Algeciras, a municipality also located in Huila.
That incident left two men and one woman dead, according to the report.
The two attacks have raised concerns about violence in the region. However, authorities have not confirmed whether the incidents are connected.
Criminal Groups Raise Security Concerns
Colombia’s Ombudsman’s Office has previously warned about the presence of criminal gangs in the region.
It has also raised concerns about the expansion of dissident groups linked to the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
Investigations into the latest attack are ongoing. Authorities are working to establish the facts and determine who was responsible.
