KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians to continue protecting the country’s independence by strengthening unity, preserving national sovereignty and appreciating the sacrifices made by past generations.
In a message ahead of the country’s independence celebrations, Anwar said independence was not merely a historical date, but a legacy built through the blood, sweat and tears of national heroes who fought to ensure Malaysia became a free, sovereign and dignified nation.
He said colonial rule had not only taken away the nation’s resources but also affected the people’s dignity, rights and ability to determine their own future.
Anwar reminded the younger generation to value the freedom they enjoy today and never forget the sacrifices made by their forefathers in securing independence.
As Malaysia approaches nearly seven decades of independence, the Prime Minister stressed that racial divisions and conflicts must not be allowed to weaken the country.
He highlighted the importance of unity among Malaysians, referring to the principle of “Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu” (Unity is Strength) introduced by Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, as a foundation for nation-building.
Anwar also warned against allowing Malaysia’s sovereignty to be influenced by external forces through economic pressure, ideological challenges or attempts to divide society.
He urged all Malaysians to continue defending independence, strengthening unity and building a peaceful, prosperous and dignified Malaysia MADANI for future generations.
“Merdeka! Malaysia MADANI, Kesejahteraan Dinikmati,” he said.
