KUALA LUMPUR: Three members of the Senate, including a newly appointed senator, took the oath of office before the Speaker of the Senate, Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah, today. The Chief Executive Officer and Vice-Chancellor of the International University of the Islamic Religious Council of the Federal Territory (UniMAIWP), Datuk Seri Professor Noor Inayah Ya'akub, is a new appointment. Meanwhile, two members of the Senate were re-elected, namely Hussin Ismail and RA Lingeshwaran, who were re-elected by the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly (DUN) and Penang State Legislative Assembly respectively. In his speech, Awang Bemee said Noor Inayah, who was elected by the Penang State Assembly, will serve for a period of three years effective May 14, 2026 until May 13, 2029. He said Lingeshwaran would also serve for the same period while Hussin's appointment would be effective from April 23 to April 22, 2029. "On behalf of the Senate, I extend my deepest congratulations and welcome the appointment and re-election of all the Honorable Senators who took the oath today," he said after the Senate Oath-Taking Ceremony. Awang Bemee hopes that all appointed senators will utilize their respective experience, expertise and wisdom through active participation in debate sessions, asking quality questions and effective involvement in the Senate Select Committee for the well-being of the people and the progress of the country. "In this challenging environment, the people have high hopes that the institution of Parliament will continue to play an effective role in examining government policies, presenting insightful views and proposing practical, balanced and constructive solutions," he said. He also reminded that the National Assembly not only functions as a body that examines and approves bills, but is also a forum for mature, prudent and constructive debate in the interests of the people. According to the Parliamentary calendar, the Dewan Negara sitting for the Second Meeting, Fifth Term of the 15th Parliament will last for 10 days starting July 20. -- BERNAMA

SEREMBAN -- Pakatan Harapan (PH) deputy chairman Anthony Loke said the coalition has the ability and political strength in Negeri Sembilan to face the State Election (PRN), without having to rely on any other party. He said PH was able to govern the state on its own from 2018 to 2023 despite facing various challenges. "When the Sheraton Move happened at the central level in 2020, Negeri Sembilan remained intact. Even during the COVID-19 period, we continued to govern solo even though we only had 20 seats and the government did not fall. "That proves that PH has its own strength and the people's confidence in our administration remains strong," he told reporters after a Hi-Tea Ceremony with Outstanding Students of the 2025 Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) at the Seremban parliamentary level here today. In the 14th General Election (GE14), PH formed the government in Negeri Sembilan after winning 20 out of 36 State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats. The DAP secretary-general said internal strength, administrative stability and a record of service to the people must continue to be PH's main foundation in facing future political challenges. Meanwhile, Loke reiterated that PH members in Negeri Sembilan must be prepared to face the possibility of a simultaneous state election (PRN) with Johor or Melaka, should the two states dissolve their state assemblies in the near future. However, he said the matter was subject to the decision of Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun after referring to the top PH leadership and obtaining the approval of the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, while speaking at the PH 2026 Convention in Johor last week, said the coalition was prepared to field candidates in all state constituencies in Johor and Negeri Sembilan if UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) decided to contest all seats in the upcoming state elections. -- BERNAMA

MARANG, May 22 -- PAS will not bow to the will of any party, including Bersatu, in determining its political direction. Its president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party would thoroughly examine every negative action taken by Bersatu. He also said that PAS does not rule out the possibility of moving forward without Bersatu ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16) should both parties fail to reach a consensus in their political cooperation. The party is currently reassessing its ties with its ally in Perikatan Nasional (PN) comprehensively to ensure it does not affect the party’s performance. “We are reviewing all aspects (of the cooperation) because the election is approaching. Elections come with gains and losses. If it affects election matters, we will act accordingly,” he said at a press conference after a Dhuha lecture here today. Abdul Hadi also indicated that the ties between the two parties are currently being tested, saying that PAS remains patient, but stressing that such patience has its limits. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR, MAY 21 -- Election Commission of Malaysia has announced that the Supplementary Electoral Roll for April 2026 (DPT BLN4/2026) has officially been certified and gazetted, with the review process now open to the public for 30 days beginning today until June 19, 2026. In a media statement issued on Thursday, SPR secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said the electoral roll was certified on May 20 and gazetted on May 21, 2026.           The DPT BLN4/2026 includes 39,111 Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above who were automatically registered as new voters between April 1 and April 30, 2026. The roll also contains 15,880 registered voters who changed their voting constituencies and 1,369 voters who updated their voter category or status. SPR has provided five methods for the public to review their voting information. Voters can check their status through the official SPR Portal, the MySPR Semak Portal, the MySPR Online Application, the MySPR Semak mobile application, or by contacting the Voter Registration Review Hotline at 03-8892 7218. In addition, the public may also access the official portals of State Election Offices through State Election Offices Portal for further information and downloadable forms. SPR urged citizens who turned 18 during the April 2026 period, as well as voters who applied to change constituencies or voter categories, to verify their details in the supplementary roll. Those who discover their names are missing may submit a claim using Form C either online through the MySPR application or by visiting their respective State Election Office. The commission also stated that registered voters who wish to object to the inclusion of voters who transferred into their constituency may do so by submitting Form D through the same channels. According to the statement, Forms C and D can also be downloaded from the State Election Offices portal and submitted to the relevant State Election Director together with the required objection fee during office hours throughout the review period. SPR advised the public to contact the commission directly or visit its official portal for any enquiries related to the DPT BLN4/2026 review process. PUTRAJAYA, May 21 -- Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun has confirmed that no by-elections will be held for the Pandan and Setiawangsa parliamentary seats yesterday. He said the matter was based on Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution, whereby Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul had informed the EC that there was no necessity to fill the casual vacancies. “In line with that, no by-election for the P.100 Pandan and P.118 Setiawangsa parliamentary constituencies will be held,” he said in a statement today. He said the EC received notification from Johari through a letter dated today regarding the status of the two parliamentary seats after they were declared vacant under Article 51 of the Federal Constitution. On Sunday (May 17), Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who is also a former PKR deputy president, and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, a former PKR vice-president, announced that they would vacate their parliamentary seats on Monday and leave the party effective Tuesday through letters submitted to the party secretary-general. KLUANG: UMNO is ready to accept any former Bersatu members or leaders who have been subject to disciplinary action to join the party's struggle, under the Rumah Bangsa idea, said UMNO Vice President Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. He, who is also the Chairman of the National Home Unification Committee, said that as a party that is a "home" for the Malays, UMNO is always open to accepting anyone who wants to join the party. "We are open to accepting anyone, because our house is 'Rumah Bangsa', meaning the house is big enough for anyone," he told reporters after officiating the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) MADANI Economy programme at Batu 3 Camp, here, today. He said this when asked to comment on the decision of the Bersatu Disciplinary Board to dismiss and suspend the membership of elected representatives and party leaders. Yesterday, the Bersatu Disciplinary Board dismissed and suspended the membership of four more elected representatives and party leaders for violating Clause 9.1.4 of the Bersatu Constitution and the Members' Code of Ethics and Conduct. On Friday, the party also took disciplinary action against six of its leaders, including expelling two State Assemblymen (ADUNs) and suspending the membership of four other party leaders with immediate effect. According to him, May 11, 1946, was a historic date that marked the birth of a major movement for the Malay community, one that has endured through changing times in defending religion, race and the homeland.
