KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called on Malaysians to remain vigilant and take early precautionary measures following forecasts that the El Niño phenomenon is expected to influence the country’s weather patterns in the coming months and potentially continue into early 2027.
In a statement today, Zahid, who also serves as Chairman of the Central Disaster Management Committee, said he had taken note of the latest advisory issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) regarding the anticipated impact of El Niño.
According to MET Malaysia, the phenomenon is expected to bring hotter and drier weather conditions than usual during the Southwest Monsoon season, resulting in reduced rainfall in several areas across the country.
Zahid warned that the prolonged dry spell could increase the risk of water shortages, forest and peatland fires, as well as haze episodes.
“I would like to advise all Malaysians to remain prepared and stay informed about current weather developments. The public should use water wisely, avoid open burning activities and prioritise the health and well-being of their families, especially those who are more vulnerable to hot weather conditions,” he said.
He also encouraged the public to obtain the latest weather updates through the myCuaca mobile application and official MET Malaysia communication channels.
Zahid stressed that early preparedness and responsible action from all parties are crucial in mitigating risks and ensuring public safety during the anticipated weather changes.
“Insya-Allah, the Government will continue to closely monitor developments and take the necessary measures to ensure that the safety and welfare of the people remain a top priority,” he added.
