JOHOR BAHRU, October 29, 2026 — A total of 5,000 students from low-income families in Johor will receive free YES 5G SIM packs. The initiative aims to help them study online following the recent haze.
The SIM packs are worth RM100,000 in total. Each pack includes 50GB of high-speed internet data.
As a result, students can access online lessons and digital learning materials from home.
According to a Facebook post by Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, Raja Zarith Sofiah initiated the effort out of concern for students with limited internet access.
Free Internet Access for B40 Students
The initiative supports students from B40 households. This group refers to lower-income families.
With the free data, students can follow online lessons and access learning materials. In addition, the support may help families reduce their internet costs.
The initiative is especially useful when haze conditions affect normal school activities.
Three Organisations Support the Initiative
The donation comes under the Johor Digital Connectivity Initiative. Three organisations are involved:
- Raja Zarith Sofiah Foundation of Johor (YRZSNJ)
- YTL Communications Sdn Bhd
- Johor State Education Department
The handover ceremony took place at Menara YTL in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
YTL Communications chief executive officer Wing K. Lee attended the event. YRZSNJ chief executive officer Hishamuddin Abdul Rahim also officiated the ceremony.
Initiative Aims to Close the Digital Gap
Hishamuddin said the contribution would help reduce the digital divide among B40 families.
The digital divide is the gap between people who have internet access and those who do not.
Meanwhile, Wing said he hoped the SIM packs would help students continue their studies without falling behind.
The programme also shows how public and private organisations can work together to support education.
By improving internet access, the initiative aims to give more students a fair chance to learn from home.
