KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 – Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the government is reviewing Malaysia’s radio industry as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s broadcasting ecosystem and ensure local radio remains relevant in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Speaking after a town hall session with the management and representatives of local radio stations, Fahmi said the engagement provided an important platform for industry players to share their views, challenges and proposals directly with the government.
He said the discussions focused on several key issues, including increasing the promotion of local music content, improving licensing models, safeguarding the long-term sustainability of the radio industry, and identifying strategies to help broadcasters remain competitive amid accelerating digital transformation.
According to Fahmi, the feedback gathered during the session will contribute to the government’s ongoing review of the industry’s future direction.
He said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will conduct a comprehensive study of the radio industry as part of the formulation of the National Broadcasting Policy.
The review, he added, will be aligned with the National Creative Industry Policy as well as the agenda of the Orange Economy Council, reflecting the government’s broader commitment to developing Malaysia’s creative and broadcasting sectors.
Fahmi stressed that close collaboration between the government and industry stakeholders remains essential in addressing emerging challenges and unlocking new opportunities for growth.
He expressed confidence that through continued engagement, local radio stations would remain competitive, sustainable and continue serving as a trusted medium that stays close to the hearts of Malaysians despite the changing media landscape.
