KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 20 — Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh expressed her appreciation to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) staff who worked hard to clean up Dataran Merdeka after the area was filled with rubbish following the screening of the 2026 World Cup final.
Hannah also reminded the public to play their role in maintaining the cleanliness of public spaces because throwing garbage into bins is the basic responsibility of every individual and should not be left entirely to public officials.
“Yes, I know every taxpayer deserves good services. DBKL must carry out its responsibilities and they are doing it. But throwing garbage in the bin is a basic thing that we should do ourselves.
“The right to receive services does not mean that all responsibilities can be handed over to public servants. They should not be forced to clean up the garbage that we deliberately leave behind,” he said in a post on his Facebook page today.
He said Dataran Merdeka was not just a location for organising events, but rather was part of the country’s history and the dignity of the capital city which needed to be preserved by all parties.
Hannah said that a CIVIL Malaysia is not just about the government carrying out its responsibilities, but also demanding that the people carry out their basic responsibilities.
He also reiterated Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s assertion that a country’s progress is not only measured through physical development, but also through the community’s attitude in respecting and caring for public spaces.
“Kuala Lumpur is our home. Don’t dirty your own house and expect others to clean it,” he said.
