Hydroshoppe’s KL Tower Bribery Trial To Start On Jan 4 Next Year

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — The High Court here today set 20 days,  starting from Jan 4 next year, for the trial of Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd and its directors over the alleged offer of RM500,000 a year for 15 years to Tan Sri Annuar Musa in connection with the takeover of the Kuala Lumpur Tower concession.

Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin set the dates during case management proceedings attended by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ifa Sirrhu Samsudin, from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and lawyer Tang Jia Yearn, who appeared for Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd director Datuk Abdul Hamid Shaikh Abdul Razak Shaikh.

The court fixed the trial dates for Jan 4 to 7, Feb 2 to 4, March 16 to 18, June 8 to 10, and June 14 to 17 and June 21 to 23, 2027.

Judge Noor Ruwena also set Aug 18 for mention and submission of documents.

During the proceedings, the court recorded a plea of not guilty from Abdul Hamid Shaikh, who also represented Hydroshoppe, following the transfer of the case from the Sessions Court to the High Court on May 26.

COURT-HYDROSHOPPE 2 (LAST) KUALA LUMPUR

On April 5, 2023, Abdul Hamid, 52, was charged with offering a bribe through Datuk Tan Ser Lay as an inducement to Annuar, who was then the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, to expedite the takeover of the management and administration of the Menara Kuala Lumpur concession by the company.

The offence was allegedly committed at the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia in Putrajaya between July and August 2022.

The charge, framed under Section 16(b)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, provides a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment or a fine of five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Hydroshoppe is also charged under Section 17A(1)(a) of the MACC Act 2009 as a commercial organisation for jointly offering the bribe to Tan for Annuar’s benefit, at the same location and dates.

This charge is punishable by a fine of at least 10 times the bribe amount or RM1 million, whichever is higher, or up to 20 years in prison, or both, upon conviction.
