JAIS Investigates Viral Claims of Muslim Participating in Non-Muslim Religious Rituals

SHAH ALAM, October 11 2026, The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) has launched an investigation into a viral social media post alleging that a Muslim individual participated in religious rituals of another faith.

JAIS director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the case was being investigated under Sections 4 and 10 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995, involving acts of worship contrary to Islamic law and conduct that could bring Islam into disrepute.

However, he said the department had not verified claims that the alleged incident took place during the Thaipusam festival at Batu Caves.

Mohd Shahzihan also said the possibility of the viral post being manipulated using image editing or artificial intelligence could not be ruled out.

He added that JAIS was examining the available information, including the location of the alleged incident, to determine whether the case falls within its jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan said his department had taken note of video clips allegedly showing a Muslim participating in non-Muslim religious rituals, including acts of worship and the recitation of certain incantations.

The relevant authorities are taking action following the circulation of the videos.

JAIS stressed that all complaints involving matters of Islamic faith in Selangor would be investigated thoroughly, fairly and professionally.
