KOTA TINGGI, Sept 22 2026, A 37-year-old man suspected of killing his five-year-old niece by throwing her into a river at Kampung Padang, Tanjung Sedili, here, has been remanded for seven days from today.
The remand order, which runs until Sept 28, was issued by Sessions Court Judge Hafizah Abdul Rajak to facilitate investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
The suspect, who had received treatment at Kota Tinggi Hospital, was brought to the court at about 9 am today wearing a blue T-shirt and escorted by police officers.
The girl was found dead in the river yesterday morning.
Kota Tinggi District Police Chief Supt Yusof Othman previously said the suspect was believed to have thrown the girl into the river before allegedly going on a rampage while armed with a machete and chasing a 40-year-old man.
Police received a report about the incident at approximately 9.30 am and rushed to the scene, where a struggle occurred between the suspect and police, resulting in one officer sustaining injuries.
The suspect was subsequently arrested.
Yusof also said the suspect was believed to have mental health problems.
