KUCHING, November 3 – Media organisations in Sarawak are improving their newsrooms through better equipment, digital technology and staff training under the Media Innovation Fund.
The funding helps local media companies improve their reporting skills and produce better digital content.
Sarawak Tribune Editor-in-Chief Aden Nagrace said the fund had helped the organisation strengthen its digital storytelling capabilities.
He explained that modern journalism requires more than written news reports. Journalists must also produce photographs, videos and other digital content to reach wider audiences.
The support has helped the newsroom improve its equipment and develop new ways to present news stories.
RM30 Million Allocated for Media Innovation Fund 2.0
On October 30, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil announced RM30 million for the Media Innovation Fund 2.0.
The initiative aims to help media organisations adopt digital technology, improve staff skills and explore artificial intelligence (AI).
The latest allocation builds on an earlier programme announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) celebrations in June 2025.
Fahmi said 72 media companies had benefited from the previous programme, which also received RM30 million in funding.
The support helped media organisations improve their newsroom operations, train employees and strengthen digital content production.
DayakDaily Invests in AI Training and New Equipment
Meanwhile, DayakDaily Project Manager Marlynda Chan said the organisation had used the funding to provide AI training for its journalists.
The training helped staff understand how to use AI tools in their daily work.
The organisation also arranged professional makeup training to prepare journalists for interviews and official events.
In addition, DayakDaily purchased professional cameras, video equipment and laptops to improve its reporting capabilities.
It also acquired a display television to support team discussions, meetings and training sessions.
Marlynda said these improvements had helped the newsroom produce better content and work more efficiently.
AI Helps Journalists Improve Their Work
Marlynda stressed that journalists must use AI responsibly.
She said the training had helped staff understand the proper and ethical use of AI tools.
AI can support research, content preparation and daily newsroom tasks. However, journalists must still check information and maintain professional standards.
The new cameras and video equipment have also improved coverage of festivals, parades and interviews.
Supporting the Future of Malaysian Journalism
The Media Innovation Fund highlights the importance of digital technology in today’s media industry.
News organisations must continue improving their skills and equipment to keep up with changing audience habits.
With better training and modern tools, journalists can produce more engaging news content across digital platforms.
The RM30 million Media Innovation Fund 2.0 is expected to provide further support for media organisations as they adapt to the changing demands of digital journalism.
