SEREMBAN, July 24 2026— Political parties contesting the 16th Negeri Sembilan State Election are expected to ramp up their campaign efforts as the race enters its second week, following a relatively subdued start to the official campaign period.
Campaign activities during the opening week have remained moderate, with the traditional display of party flags and banners largely confined to strategic locations such as village roads, community halls, major roads and overhead bridges. Instead of large-scale rallies, candidates have focused on grassroots engagement through house-to-house visits, walkabouts, congregational prayers and small-group meetings, while also leveraging social media to connect with voters.
Throughout the first week, top coalition leaders have actively supported their candidates on the ground. Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim visited Negeri Sembilan twice, while Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi made three campaign visits across the state.
Political observers anticipate a more vigorous campaign in the coming days as senior party leaders intensify their presence and election machinery expands its operations ahead of polling day.
Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, who is defending the Linggi state seat, said PH’s initial campaign strategy centred on targeted micro-campaigning through direct engagement with local communities. He added that campaign activities would be intensified in the coming week but noted that it remains premature to predict the coalition’s electoral performance.
Meanwhile, BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the coalition is concentrating on strengthening its campaign machinery across all constituencies it is contesting. He urged candidates and campaign workers to maintain their momentum by continuing to meet voters directly to maximise BN’s chances of securing a strong result in the election.
Negeri Sembilan UMNO liaison chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias, who is defending the Pertang seat, described BN’s campaign progress in the Jelebu parliamentary constituency as encouraging, with candidates increasing their outreach efforts to engage as many voters as possible.
Political analyst Dr Mujibu Abd Muis, a senior lecturer in Political Science at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Seremban 3 Campus, said campaign trends have become more apparent after the first week.
He observed that the contest currently appears to be dominated by PH and BN, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) continues working to build stronger momentum. According to him, PH has been more aggressive in implementing targeted micro-campaigning strategies.
Dr Mujibu said voter expectations have also evolved, with many now placing greater emphasis on a candidate’s visibility, accessibility and engagement with the community rather than relying solely on political speeches.
He added that the final week of campaigning is traditionally the most crucial period, as undecided and fence-sitting voters often make their final decisions before polling day.
A total of 103 candidates are contesting the 36 seats in the Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly. PH is fielding candidates in all 36 constituencies, followed by BN with 25 candidates, Bersatu with 24 and PN with 11. Barisan Jemaah Islamiah Se-Malaysia (Berjasa), Parti Orang Asli Malaysia (ASLI) and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) are each contesting one seat, while four independent candidates are also in the race.
Early voting for the Negeri Sembilan state election will take place on July 28, while polling day is scheduled for August 1.
