KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 – PAS has questioned the alleged decision to sideline former national footballer Azlan Johar from his role as a sports commentator for the 2026 FIFA World Cup broadcasts on RTM, following his recent announcement that he had joined the party.
In a statement today, PAS Secretary-General Takiyuddin Hassan said the party was concerned by reports that Azlan had been relieved of his duties as a sports commentator and sought clarification on whether the move was linked to his political affiliation.
Azlan publicly announced his membership in PAS during an event in Seremban on June 13.
“If true, PAS wants to know whether the action is related to Azlan Johar’s decision to join PAS,” Takiyuddin said.
He urged all parties, including the federal government and its agencies, to respect the constitutional rights of Malaysian citizens, particularly the right to freedom of association and political participation as guaranteed under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution.
According to PAS, any denial of such rights would be especially regrettable given Azlan’s longstanding contribution to sports broadcasting.
The party noted that he had served as a commentator and analyst for more than 10 FIFA World Cup tournaments throughout his broadcasting career.
PAS also highlighted Azlan’s credentials, describing him as a prolific striker for state and national football teams during the 1980s. He is also said to hold a high-level football coaching licence and currently serves as chairman of Yayasan Lagenda.
Takiyuddin said PAS viewed any action based on political affiliation as contrary to democratic principles and called on the government to ensure that such practices do not occur.
He added that the government should remain committed to upholding civil liberties and institutional reforms, in line with previous pledges on democratic reform and human rights.
As of the statement’s release, no official explanation had been issued by RTM regarding Azlan’s reported removal from the World Cup commentary team.
