SHAH ALAM, May 8 — Perikatan Nasional leaders in Selangor have called on the state government to fully implement the decree of the Sultan of Selangor regarding environmental pollution and water contamination linked to pig farming activities in the state.
In a joint statement today, Selangor Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia and Parti Islam Se-Malaysia said they upheld the position of the Sultan of Selangor that the issue should be resolved conclusively for the well-being of the people and the prosperity of the state.
The statement said the ruler had repeatedly expressed concerns over pollution involving land, air and river water sources, including risks to water catchment areas caused by pig farming activities.
The coalition also noted the Sultan’s suggestion that pork imports could be used to meet the needs of non-Muslim communities in Selangor.
Perikatan Nasional assemblymen claimed they had consistently raised the matter during the recent Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting to ensure the ruler’s views and advice were fully implemented by the state administration.
However, they alleged that three PN assemblymen were ordered out and suspended from the assembly proceedings, while action was not taken against the Seri Kembangan assemblyman over remarks deemed to have challenged the Sultan’s decree.
The opposition bloc also criticised the rejection of a motion by the Taman Medan assemblyman to refer the Seri Kembangan assemblyman to the State Assembly Rights and Privileges Committee.
In the statement, PN further accused the state government of remaining silent over the issue and questioned its commitment to preserving harmony in Selangor.
The coalition also denied claims that the pig farming issue was racially motivated, stressing that the matter concerned environmental management and public welfare rather than discrimination against any community.
The statement was jointly issued by Selangor Bersatu chief Mohamed Azmin Ali and Selangor PAS commissioner Ab Halim Tamuri, together with Perikatan Nasional state assemblymen.
