KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — Former minister Rafizi Ramli has welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s indication that the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on Tabung Haji will be made public soon, saying the disclosure should provide lessons for Malaysians.
In a media statement on Thursday, Rafizi said the release of the report was important as the RCI was established to investigate matters involving public interest and its findings should be made accessible to the public.
He claimed that the issues surrounding Tabung Haji stemmed from years of weak governance under the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) administration, adding that the institution’s restructuring in 2019 came at a significant cost to taxpayers.
Rafizi said the government’s decision to reveal the report would help the public understand the circumstances surrounding Tabung Haji’s financial challenges and the impact of political decisions on public institutions.
He also claimed that the report should have been made public earlier, alleging that political considerations had delayed its release.
Rafizi said he was pleased with the decision to disclose the RCI findings, as he believed it would validate concerns he had raised regarding Tabung Haji’s financial position between 2015 and 2018.
He expressed hope that the episode would serve as a reminder on the importance of transparency, accountability and good governance in managing institutions involving public funds.
