SHAH ALAM, July 9 – Selangor police have dismantled four drug trafficking syndicates following the seizure of 116.2 kilograms of cannabis buds worth an estimated RM13.34 million in four separate raids at Terminal 1 of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Kota Warisan, Sepang.
Selangor Police Chief CP Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the operations were carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the KLIA District Police Headquarters with the assistance of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) auxiliary police at KLIA between the end of June and early July.
A total of five suspects, aged between 25 and 40, were arrested. They comprised two foreign men, two local women and one local man.
Speaking at a press conference at the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters on Thursday, Shazeli said the first raid was conducted on June 29 after police detected two suspicious suitcases through an airport scanning machine.
“The owner of the luggage, a foreign national from a Southeast Asian country, was arrested at the flight departure waiting area. Initial inspection uncovered 60 plastic packages containing compressed cannabis buds weighing approximately 33.6 kilograms, with an estimated street value of RM2.7 million,” he said.
In the second raid at the same location, police detected another suspicious suitcase and discovered 39 plastic packages containing compressed cannabis buds weighing about 21.1 kilograms, valued at RM1.7 million.
Police subsequently arrested a local woman who owned the luggage. Preliminary urine screening found that she had tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Shazeli said investigations into the remaining two raids are ongoing as police continue efforts to identify other individuals linked to the syndicates and to curb drug trafficking activities through the country’s main international gateway.
