Selangor Sultan Says Constitutional Monarchy Remains Key To National Stability

KUALA LUMPUR, October 24, 2026 — The constitutional monarchy continues to play a vital role in safeguarding Malaysia’s stability, harmony and unity despite changes in society, Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah said.

His Royal Highness said the monarchy’s fundamental responsibilities remained unchanged, particularly in upholding the Federal Constitution, ensuring continuity and serving as a unifying institution above political differences.

“The monarchy provides stability during times of change and reminds us that enduring institutions continue to play an important role in safeguarding national harmony,” he said in a special interview with Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.

The interview was held in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee marking 25 years of Sultan Sharafuddin’s reign in Selangor.

Sultan Sharafuddin said the Constitution provided clear guidance on the responsibilities of a Ruler, emphasising that his duty was to serve all Selangor residents fairly and without prejudice.

He said adherence to constitutional principles, impartiality and fairness was essential in maintaining public confidence in the monarchy, regardless of citizens’ backgrounds or political beliefs.

According to the Sultan, the institution represents continuity, stability, service and responsibility, values that remain important in a changing society.

He also stressed that leadership should be understood as a responsibility to serve the people rather than an entitlement to privileges.

Sultan Sharafuddin said institutions that promote moderation, unity and respect for the rule of law continued to play an important role in ensuring a harmonious society.
