SEOUL, JULY 13 — The South Korean government has developed an “AI legal secretary” service that civil servants can refer to when studying the legal basis for policy planning and implementation.
The service was implemented on a trial basis this week, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing officials on Monday.
The artificial intelligence (AI) service, which will be available from Tuesday, is equipped with about 240,000 previous judicial decisions, laws and regulations, and can answer a variety of legal questions from officials, according to the government’s law ministry.
The ministry developed the service in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Science.
A basic, homemade AI model is used to generate responses and the service only serves as a temporary reference and not a final legal judgment, officials said.
“Interpreting and implementing laws is among the most challenging tasks for the civil service because it requires a high level of expertise,” said Government Minister of Justice Cho Won-cheol.
“AI secretarial services are expected to significantly improve the work efficiency of civil servants.”
