KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 — The role of sports journalists is becoming increasingly important ahead of major sporting events, including the 2027 SEA Games, as Malaysia prepares to host the Games, making close cooperation between the media and the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) even more vital, said its minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari.
He said the work of sports journalists is a noble responsibility in ensuring the public remains updated on developments in the national sports arena.
“Especially as we face upcoming sporting events, not only at the international level or abroad, but also events that we will host and organise ourselves as hosts, namely the 2027 SEA Games,” he said at the Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM)-100PLUS Awards 2025 ceremony at a hotel in the capital here today.
He said KBS would continue to work closely with sports journalists to ensure that all matters related to the development of national sports could be discussed collectively.
According to him, sports media practitioners are always seen working tirelessly and willing to sacrifice their time, energy and health to ensure developments in the country’s sports scene are delivered to the public.
“The duties carried out by our media friends, especially sports journalists, are indeed noble and this is a form of appreciation for all media personnel and sports journalists as a whole,” he said.
He expressed hope that the country’s sports media would continue to progress and play an important role in delivering the best reports to society.
Earlier, he said the SAM-100PLUS Awards is an annual event that has become the highest form of recognition for the country’s sports journalists.
He also expressed appreciation to the SAM president and the association’s committee members for continuously safeguarding the welfare and spirit of togetherness among sports journalists.
