PM Anwar : Malaysia and Turkmenistan Seal Key Agreements to Strengthen Strategic Bilateral Cooperation

ASHGABAT, June 20 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim witnessed the exchange of several key agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between Malaysia and Turkmenistan, marking a significant step forward in strengthening strategic cooperation across a range of priority sectors, yesterday. The signing ceremony, held during Anwar’s official visit to Turkmenistan, underscored both nations’ commitment to fostering a more structured, progressive, and mutually beneficial bilateral relationship. Among the documents exchanged were a Memorandum of Understanding between the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, as well as an MoU between the aviation authorities of both countries aimed at enhancing cooperation in the aviation sector. The two governments also signed an MoU on diplomatic training to strengthen collaboration in capacity-building and the development of diplomatic expertise. In addition, Malaysia and Turkmenistan concluded an Air Services Agreement, paving the way for closer connectivity and greater people-to-people and business exchanges between the two countries. Another notable development was the announcement of an MoU involving Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) and higher education institutions in Turkmenistan, reflecting the growing emphasis on academic cooperation, research, and talent development. The visit also saw the adoption of a Joint Statement by Malaysia and Turkmenistan, reaffirming their shared commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors of mutual interest. Speaking at a joint media conference with Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, Anwar said the agreements reflected the determination of both countries to elevate bilateral ties and deliver long-term benefits to their people. “These documents embody our shared aspiration to build a stronger, more organised, and complementary partnership that will continue to serve the strategic interests of both nations,” he said. The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of ensuring that all agreements reached are implemented effectively. “We have reaffirmed our collective commitment to execute every cooperation initiative that has been agreed upon in a disciplined, transparent, and effective manner,” he added. KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 – Malaysia and Russia have agreed to explore stronger strategic cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, following discussions between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, both leaders discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation, including opportunities to enhance collaboration in the energy industry, which is considered a strategic area for both nations. GENEVA, June 10 — Minister of Human Resources, Datuk Seri R. Ramanan participated in a high-level meeting with representatives of UNI Global Union, reaffirming Malaysia’s commitment to advancing workers’ rights, social justice and international labour cooperation. The meeting brought together UNI Global Union Secretary-General Christy Hoffman, UNI Gaming Head Giedre Lelyte and Senior Policy Adviser Ben Richards. It marked the first formal engagement between the Malaysian Government and UNI Global Union, taking into account the role of the UNI Malaysia Labour Centre (UNI-MLC), led by its President Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal, as an affiliate of the global labour organisation. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC), where UNI-MLC formed one of the largest worker groups within the Malaysian delegation. During the meeting, Ramanan highlighted several key initiatives undertaken by the Malaysian Government to strengthen national labour standards and improve worker protection. These include ongoing labour law reforms, the introduction of the Gig Workers Act 2025 (Act 872), the implementation of the Occupational Safety and Health Master Plan (OSHMP) 2026–2030, and the launch of the 24-Hour Non-Workplace Accident Protection Scheme (LINDUNG 24 JAM), which came into effect on June 1, 2026. Representatives from UNI Global Union and UNI-MLC also emphasised the importance of collective bargaining and freedom of association as fundamental principles in safeguarding workers’ rights and promoting fair labour practices. The meeting further addressed concerns over geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East and their potential impact on global economic stability, supply chains, employment opportunities and workers’ welfare. Participants acknowledged that such challenges could affect many countries, including Malaysia, through rising operational costs, market volatility and pressures on employment sectors. Ramanan stressed that workers’ rights and social justice principles must continue to be upheld despite global uncertainties, adding that geopolitical instability should never be used as a reason to weaken labour standards, compromise workers’ welfare or erode social protection systems that are essential for sustainable and inclusive economic development. The engagement reinforced ties between Malaysia and UNI Global Union, one of the world’s leading international labour organisations, while strengthening strategic cooperation in labour development, social dialogue and workforce empowerment at the global level. Interpol-Wanted Rames Gang Leader Arrested During International Flight

KUALA LUMPUR, MAY 26 -- A man believed to be the leader of the notorious Rames Gang was arrested during an international flight operation last Friday under Op Tiga, following close cooperation between Malaysian, Thai and Indian authorities. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director M. Kumar said the suspect was detained while travelling on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand to Hyderabad, India, before being brought back to Malaysia for further investigation. According to Kumar, the suspect is being investigated under Section 130V of the Penal Code for alleged involvement in an organised crime group. The offence carries a prison sentence of between five and 20 years upon conviction. He added that the suspect, who has been remanded until Friday, is also being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. Kumar said the Sungai Petani Magistrate’s Court in Kedah had issued an arrest warrant against the suspect on March 25 in connection with two separate murder cases in Padang Serai and Bedong that took place in February and August last year. He also revealed that Interpol issued a Red Notice against the suspect on April 24, paving the way for international cooperation in tracking and arresting him. The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), he said, expressed appreciation to both Indian and Thai authorities for their assistance in the operation. “PDRM remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring national security as well as public safety are continuously protected,” Kumar said in a statement on Monday. -- MINUTESMY / SUGAN BALAN

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic bilateral cooperation aimed at safeguarding mutual interests, regional stability and the prosperity of the people of both countries. During a bilateral meeting yesterday, both leaders discussed several key areas of cooperation, including efforts to accelerate the implementation of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and ensure the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project becomes operational by the end of 2026.
