KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 -- The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) International Bureau looks forward to constructive engagement and closer people-to-people ties with Tamil Nadu following the appointment of film star-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay as its new chief minister. Its chairman, Dr Maszlee Malik, said the bureau aims to strengthen cooperation, particularly in the fields of education, youth empowerment, technology, culture and regional cooperation. “Malaysia and Tamil Nadu share longstanding historical and cultural bonds, especially through the vibrant Malaysian Indian community, whose roots and heritage remain closely connected to Tamil civilisation and identity,” he said in a statement today. Maszlee also congratulated Vijay on his appointment, noting that the victory reflects the democratic aspirations of the people of Tamil Nadu and signals a new chapter of leadership grounded in hope, reform, and the empowerment of ordinary citizens. He further noted that the bureau recognises the deep political consciousness and rich civilisational heritage of the Indian state, citing its contributions to social justice and economic development as an inspiration to the wider region. “We believe that the strengthening of democratic institutions, inclusive governance, and people-centred policies remains essential in navigating the challenges of our time,” he said. Maszlee also extended his well-wishes to the new Chief Minister, wishing him wisdom and success in serving the people of Tamil Nadu with justice and compassion. Vijay, 51, was sworn in as Tamil Nadu’s new chief minister on Sunday after garnering enough support from other parties to command a legislative majority. His Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party won 108 seats in April's assembly election, falling short of the 118 needed for a majority of its own in the 234-member chamber.

Baru Bian seeks to quash PKR’s suit for breaching bond conditions

KUALA LUMPUR: Ba'kelalan state assemblyman (ADUN) Baru Bian has filed an application to strike out the suit filed against him by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), which is seeking RM10 million in damages over alleged breach of bond conditions when he quit the party after winning the 14th General Election (GE14) in 2018. The notice of application was filed through Messrs. YH Teh & Quek on April 6 on the grounds that the High Court of Malaya in Peninsular Malaysia did not have jurisdiction to hear the case because the cause of action arose in Sarawak. The court set May 20 for case management before High Court Judge Roslan Mat Nor. In the application, Baru Bian, who is also the former Member of Parliament for Selangau, said he signed the bond in Kuching on April 25, 2018 and his involvement with PKR was only focused on Sarawak. "The plaintiff's (PKR) actions against me, even if proven true, do not arise in Peninsular Malaysia. The claim arises in Sarawak," he said in the application. Baru Bian is among 16 former MPs and assemblymen who were sued by PKR Secretary-General Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh on behalf of PKR for allegedly violating the terms of a RM10 million bond signed with the party. Also named as defendants are Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar, Datuk Mansor Othman, Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah and Datuk Seri R. Santhara Kumar. Apart from that, Abdul Yunus Jamhari, Datuk Azman Nasrudin, Dr Afif Bahardin, Chong Fat Full, Daroyah Alwi, Haniza Mohamed Talha, Muhammad Hilman Idham, Muhammad Jailani Khamis, Robert Ling Kui Ee and Zulkifli Ibrahim were also named as defendants. In separate suits filed on Feb 19 and 27, PKR claimed that under the operative clause of the bond, each defendant agreed to pay the party RM10 million within seven days of the occurrence of any event including the defendant resigning from the party, joining another political party or becoming an independent elected representative. The plaintiff claimed to have nominated each defendant as a candidate to contest in the 14th GE and successfully won several Parliamentary and State Assembly seats, subsequently forming the Federal Government and several state governments. "However, on 24 Feb 2020, each of the defendants ceased to be party members after being elected under the party banner. They also expressed support for political coalitions other than PKR," PKR said in the statement of claim. PKR announced on March 11, 2020 that the party decided to terminate the membership of each defendant immediately and a certificate dated March 16, 2020 was issued to confirm that the membership of each defendant had been terminated and demanded that each defendant pay a bond of RM10 million, but they failed to do so.

Ahmad Farhan Tasked With Reclaiming Indera Mahkota Parliamentary Seat For PKR

KUANTAN, April 11 -- Pahang Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) State Leadership Council chairman Datuk Ahmad Farhan Fauzi says he has been entrusted by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to reclaim the Indera Mahkota parliamentary seat in the 16th General Election (GE16). Ahmad Farhan, who is also the political secretary to the Prime Minister, said the entrustment was a major responsibility that must be shouldered together. “Without the cooperation of all branch members, it would be difficult for us to move forward,” he said when speaking at the Indera Mahkota PKR Division Annual General Meeting here. Meanwhile, Ahmad Farhan, who is also the Indera Mahkota Division chief, said PKR membership in the area had now reached 6,666, with an increase of 1,962 members, and was targeting 10,000 members before the PKR National Congress begins. He said the party remained committed to recapturing the parliamentary seat, based on PKR’s record of victories in the constituency in 2008, 2013 and 2018, which would help the party remain in power in GE16. In GE15, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah defended the Indera Mahkota parliamentary seat under the Bersatu banner with a majority of 8,399 votes, defeating three challengers from Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional and Pejuang. Saifuddin had previously won the Indera Mahkota parliamentary seat representing PKR in 2018. Meanwhile, Ahmad Farhan warned parties attempting to tarnish the image of the party, including those from within its own ranks, as such actions could weaken the party. “Attacking the PKR president is like attacking all of us, and we will oppose any efforts that could divide the party,” he said.

Calls For Action Against Rafizi: PM Anwar Says Focus On Economy First

KUALA LUMPUR, April 10 -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged all parties to focus on economic issues facing the country rather than internal political matters. Anwar, who is also PKR president, said this includes calls by several party leaders for action to be taken against former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli. “It is okay. I advise them to remain calm and focus on economic issues facing the country, which are far more serious than personal matters,” he told reporters after performing Friday prayers and solat hajat at Masjid Nurussaadah here today. Previously, several party leaders, including PKR Central Leadership Council member A. Kumaresan, had called for action to be taken against Rafizi, alleging that the Pandan MP was undermining the party. Earlier, Rafizi challenged PKR to sack him when defending several statements he made against the party leadership, which were listed in the second show-cause letter issued yesterday. Rafizi has reportedly been vocal in criticising the government and PKR since stepping down as PKR deputy president and resigning as economy minister in May last year.

KUALA LUMPUR: The People's Justice Party (PKR) remains strong after 27 years of facing various challenges in the country's political arena since it was founded on April 4, 1999. PKR Information Chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that despite facing various obstacles, the party remained steadfast as a result of its integrity of principles and the strength of its struggle that never faded. "JUSTICE (PKR) was born from the spirit of reform, in an effort to uphold justice, fight injustice, defend the people's voice and build a Malaysia that is more just, democratic and with integrity. "This journey has not been easy. We have gone through various tests, challenges and twists and turns.
