KUCHING, July 17 — A 43-year-old local teacher and boarding school warden has been sentenced to a total of 46 years in prison and 26 strokes of the cane after being convicted in three separate cases of sexually abusing male students at a school in Kuching.
In the latest ruling on July 15, the Kuching Sessions Court sentenced the teacher to 15 years’ imprisonment and six strokes of the cane after finding him guilty of raping a 14-year-old male student near the boys’ hostel warden’s quarters in 2022.
The latest conviction marks the teacher’s third. In October 2025, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison and 10 strokes of the cane for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old male student. In May 2026, he received another 16-year prison sentence and 10 strokes for sexually assaulting another male student.
The court ordered all three prison sentences to run consecutively, bringing the total punishment to 46 years’ imprisonment and 26 strokes of the cane.
The Sessions Court convicted the accused under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court ordered the offender to undergo psychological rehabilitation counselling while in prison and remain under police supervision for three years after his release.
The defence sought a lighter sentence, arguing that the accused was a responsible teacher who had expressed remorse. However, the court rejected the plea, ruling that the repeated and serious nature of the offences warranted a severe sentence.
