SINGAPORE, Oct 27 2026, Â More travellers are considering sustainability when planning their trips, according to a new report by Trip.com Group.
The company’s 2026 Sustainable Travel Consumer Report found that 75.4% of travellers consider sustainability important when making travel decisions. Meanwhile, 56.8% said they intentionally choose more sustainable travel options.
In response to this growing interest, Trip.com has introduced My Travel Impact, a new feature in its app. It allows users to view their more sustainable travel choices across hotels, flights and rail in one dashboard.
The report surveyed 8,777 respondents across 29 markets in four regions. It examined what encourages travellers to make more sustainable choices and what prevents them from doing so.
Cost and Convenience Remain Major Barriers
Environmental responsibility was the main motivation for choosing more sustainable travel options, cited by 52.5% of respondents. Another 50.8% said they wanted to preserve destinations for future generations.
In addition, 44.4% said more sustainable travel could offer more authentic experiences.
However, cost remains a major concern. About 37.1% identified higher prices as a barrier, while 29.8% pointed to inconvenience or extra effort. Another 27.1% said they found it difficult to identify more sustainable options.
Price and comfort also remain important when choosing travel products. This shows that travellers need options that are both practical and affordable.
My Travel Impact Tracks Sustainable Choices
Trip.com’s new My Travel Impact feature brings information about selected travel choices into one place.
The dashboard covers three areas:
- Hotels: It tracks nights spent at properties carrying Trip.com’s Certified Sustainable label, which is based on recognised third-party certification.
- Flights: It estimates emissions avoided when travellers choose lower-emission flight options, where comparable data is available.
- Rail: It estimates emissions savings when travellers choose rail instead of travelling by petrol-powered cars, where comparable data is available.
The feature aims to help users better understand the impact of their travel decisions. It also makes sustainability-related information easier to access while planning and reviewing trips.
Travellers Want Clearer Sustainability Information
The report also found that travellers want clearer guidance when booking trips online.
Some 41.6% of respondents said clear sustainability labels would help them choose better options. Meanwhile, 32.7% wanted a dashboard showing the carbon impact of their bookings.
Furthermore, 64.2% said the availability of more sustainable travel options would influence their choice of booking platform.
These findings suggest that travel companies can help consumers make informed decisions by providing clear information and easy-to-understand comparisons.
Nature and Scenic Journeys Attract Travellers
The report found that travellers are interested in experiences that connect them with nature and local destinations.
Some 41.6% preferred exploring nature and outdoor destinations. Scenic rail journeys attracted 34.1%, while 32.7% were interested in visiting lesser-known places with fewer crowds.
Meanwhile, 31.9% said staying in hotels with strong sustainability practices would improve their travel experience.
Climate conditions are also affecting travel plans. The report found that 62% of respondents had changed at least one part of a trip because of extreme weather. This included delaying travel, changing travel dates or choosing a different destination.
Younger Travellers Show Stronger Interest
Younger generations reported higher participation in more sustainable travel choices.
The survey found that 69.5% of Gen Z respondents intentionally chose more sustainable options. The figure was 63% among Millennials, 50.6% among Gen X and 40.6% among Baby Boomers.
The results point to stronger engagement among younger travellers. However, price, comfort and access to reliable information remain important factors across the wider market.
Trip.com Group said it continues to work with industry partners, including the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and Travalyst, to support credible sustainability certification and more consistent emissions information.
The company aims to make it easier for travellers to understand their options and consider sustainability when planning future journeys.
