Malaysia Masters: Akechi Ends Letshanaa’s Semi-final Dream

KUALA LUMPUR, May 22-- National women's singles shuttler K. Letshanaa saw her impressive run at the Malaysia Masters 2026 come to an end after crashing out in the quarter-finals against Japan's Hina Akechi here today. Letshanaa made a promising start and appeared on course to take the opening game comfortably after racing to a 20-11 lead in the match at the Unifi Arena, Bukit Jalil. However, the world No. 32 momentarily lost her focus, allowing world No. 24 Akechi to reel off eight consecutive points before the Malaysian eventually secured the first game 21-19. The momentum shift proved decisive as the 21-year-old Akechi raised her level to claim the next two games 21-12, 21-10 and seal a semi-final berth after a 57-minute contest. Letshanaa admitted she paid the price for trying to finish off the opening game too quickly. "I wanted to finish the opening set faster and that was why I started to lose focus. However, the Japanese player also played quite well, was consistent and kept changing her game plan," she told reporters after the match. Despite the disappointment, the 22-year-old remained upbeat and believes her breakthrough moment at higher-level tournaments will come sooner rather than later. The quarter-final appearance nevertheless continued Letshanaa's encouraging progress this season, having reached the semi-finals of the Indonesia Masters 2026 in January, her best achievement so far at a Super 500 tournament. She will now turn her attention to the Singapore Open next week, where a daunting opening-round clash against China's world No. 4 Chen Yu Fei awaits. Letshanaa's exit also means Malaysia's wait for a women's singles semi-finalist at the Malaysia Masters continues after professional shuttler Goh Jin Wei was the last local player to feature in the last four before falling 16-21, 16-21 to eventual champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand in the 2019 edition. Meanwhile, a mammoth task awaits Akechi tomorrow as she will face top seed Yu Fei, who defeated Thailand's Pitchamon Opatniputh 21-19, 21-9. The Malaysia Masters, a Super 500 tournament, runs until May 24 and offers a total prize purse of USD500,000 (RM1.98 million). -- BERNAMA

The Rise of Pet-Friendly Cafes and Resorts in Malaysia

Malaysia’s lifestyle scene is evolving rapidly, and one of the biggest trends gaining momentum in recent years is the rise of pet-friendly cafes, restaurants, and resorts. From bustling cafes in Kuala Lumpur to peaceful nature retreats in Pahang, more businesses are welcoming pets as part of the family experience. Pet ownership in Malaysia has grown significantly, especially among millennials and Gen Z consumers who view pets not just as animals, but as companions and family members. As a result, the demand for places where owners can dine, relax, and travel together with their pets has increased dramatically. In Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, pet-friendly cafes are becoming part of urban lifestyle culture. Popular spots now offer outdoor seating, pet menus, water stations, and even pet playgrounds. Establishments such as Pawty Time Cafe, Cotta, W PLACE | Pet-Friendly Cafe, and After One KL have become popular weekend destinations for pet lovers seeking quality dining experiences with their furry companions. The trend is not limited to cafes alone. Specialty pet cafes are also attracting attention with unique concepts. Places like Huskiss and Furrito Haus Cafe & Pet Mart allow visitors to interact with dogs and exotic animals while enjoying meals and coffee. According to recent lifestyle reports, Malaysia’s pet cafe industry is diversifying beyond traditional cat and dog cafes into more interactive experiences featuring reptiles, alpacas, and farm animals. Meanwhile, Penang continues to emerge as one of Malaysia’s most active pet-friendly food destinations. Cafes such as Bark & Bean Pet Cafe have helped build a strong community among pet owners, combining cafe culture with grooming, wellness, and pet socialization. Reports indicate that local authorities in Penang have also begun discussing clearer policies for pet-friendly dining spaces as the sector continues to grow. The hospitality sector is also adapting to this growing lifestyle trend. Resorts and staycation destinations are increasingly offering pet-friendly accommodations for travelers unwilling to leave their pets behind. Nature-based retreats such as The Dusun, Gibbon Retreat Bentong, Beacon Resort, and LiLLA Summer Retreat @ Bentong, Pahang (Formerly Known as Karak Orchard Resort) are becoming attractive getaway options for families and pet owners looking for outdoor experiences. Beach resorts are also entering the trend. Destinations such as Ruby's Resort in Pahang and Bon Ton Resort in Langkawi are known among travelers for their relaxed atmosphere and pet-friendly environment. These resorts offer guests the opportunity to enjoy seaside vacations without separating from their pets, something increasingly valued by modern travelers. Industry observers believe this trend reflects larger lifestyle changes in Malaysia. Many urban consumers now prioritize experiences that integrate wellness, leisure, and companionship. Pet-friendly businesses are responding by creating more inclusive environments while maintaining hygiene and safety standards. However, the growth of pet-friendly spaces has also sparked discussions about regulations and public comfort. Authorities in Selangor and Penang have recently explored clearer guidelines regarding pets in malls and food establishments to balance hygiene, cultural sensitivities, and consumer demand. Despite these debates, the overall direction of the industry remains positive. Social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram have accelerated the popularity of pet-friendly destinations, with cafes and resorts frequently going viral through user-generated content. Many businesses now see pet-friendly policies not only as a service enhancement but also as a powerful branding strategy that attracts younger consumers. As Malaysia’s lifestyle and tourism industries continue to evolve, pet-friendly cafes and resorts are expected to become even more common across major cities and tourist destinations. For pet owners, the trend represents more than convenience — it reflects a growing culture where pets are increasingly included in everyday social life, travel, and leisure experiences. -- MINUTESMY / SUGAN BALAN

Malaysia working to guarantee energy supply until December following global crisis – Fadillah

PUTRAJAYA -- Malaysia is working to ensure that the country's energy supply security continues to be maintained until December following the global supply crisis which is affecting economic chains and increasing energy costs. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said that, so far, the country's energy supply is expected to be sufficient until July, while efforts are being intensified, including obtaining additional supply sources from abroad. "So far, God willing, our energy supply is guaranteed until July. Petronas is working hard to obtain all supplies, even if it means going to Africa." "If everything (supplies) can be collected, God willing we will have guaranteed energy supply until December," he said when speaking at the PETRA Monthly Assembly, here, today. He said the current global energy crisis is affecting the entire economic chain, especially the logistics sector which has seen costs increase before ultimately impacting the prices of goods and security of supply. Fadillah said the impact of the crisis was also felt in other sectors including medicine and manufacturing due to the shortage of certain raw materials such as plastic used in packaging and various industrial needs. "In Malaysia, we still take it for granted. We still feel as if Malaysia is not facing a crisis. That is the position in Malaysia, but in fact many parties are working to ensure that we are still in this comfortable situation," he said. In this regard, Fadillah said that all parties need to play a role by ensuring savings in electricity and water consumption to reduce energy consumption. "When we reduce energy consumption, we can extend the duration of our energy supply and ultimately we will have security and will not be affected by the crisis that occurs," he said. He said that the government, through the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) Meeting which is held every week, is also engaging with various sectors to identify the impact of the crisis on the national economy as well as intervention measures that can be implemented. He said the efforts included ensuring the survival of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as well as preventing job losses and reducing the impact on the people. At the same time, he said, the government will continue to give priority to three main aspects of the energy sector, namely security of supply, prices that the people can afford, and environmental sustainability. -- BERNAMA

Ringgit opens higher against US dollar, major currencies

The ringgit opened stronger against the United States (US) dollar and other major currencies on Friday, supported by easing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and Malaysia's improving macroeconomic prospects. At 8am, the local currency rose to 3.9550/9645 against the US dollar at 3.9595/9630 at Thursday's close. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd Chief Economist, Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid, said optimism that the US and Iran would reach an amicable solution continued to increase. He said that West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and Brent crude oil prices decreased by 1.49 percent and 2.32 percent to US$97.79 per barrel and US$102.58 per barrel, respectively. "According to Iranian news agencies, Tehran is examining a proposal from the US which is seen as likely to bridge some of the differences between the two parties," he told Bernama. He also said the ringgit is expected to continue to be in a better position following Malaysia's positive macroeconomic backdrop, particularly when the current account surplus increases to 3.0 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in the first quarter of 2026 compared to 0.5 percent in the previous quarter. "In addition, the government's fiscal position continues to improve with the fiscal deficit narrowing to RM17.1 billion or 3.3 percent of GDP in the first quarter of 2026 compared to RM21.9 billion or 4.5 percent of GDP in the same period in 2025." "Therefore, the ringgit is expected to remain strongly supported at around RM3.95 to RM3.96 against the US dollar today," he said. The local currency rose against the British pound to 5.3120/3247 from 5.3220/3267 at Thursday's close, strengthened against the euro to 4.5945/6056 from 4.6037/6078 previously and rose against the Japanese yen to 2.4866/4928 from 2.4906/4929.
