Johor Polls: Underdog Status Does Not Dampen Spirit Of PH Candidate In Pasir Raja

KOTA TINGGI, June 29 -- Being the underdog in a Barisan Nasional (BN) stronghold has not dampened the spirit of Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Pasir Raja state constituency, Mohd Fakharuddin Moslim. The Johor PKR information chief said his candidacy in Pasir Raja offers a golden opportunity to present new ideas to advance the local community. Mohd Fakharuddin, involved in politics and community work since 2010, said he aims to bring further development to residents if given the mandate in the 16th Johor State Election. He said his manifesto focuses on three main areas: youth empowerment, infrastructure, and community welfare. "The first step I will take is to create a sustainable local economic ecosystem for youth to curb migration to cities like Kulai, Johor Bahru, or Singapore," he told Bernama here recently. He said these efforts include strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and supporting young entrepreneurs in the constituency. Mohd Fakharuddin added that infrastructure is also a priority, especially road quality, public amenities, and internet access, which need improvement in some areas. He pledged to ensure that welfare aid for groups such as the elderly, single mothers, and B40 families is distributed more efficiently and widely. He also intends to practise a no-protocol leadership style to strengthen ties between the elected representative and the public. "I want the community to contact me directly, chat casually like friends, and see me as part of their family because my office doors will always be open to the people," he said. Asked about contesting in a BN stronghold, Mohd Fakharuddin said he did not feel pressured during the campaign and believed PH had the advantage due to instability and internal issues within the opposing parties. "We also need to look at the composition of young voters, who make up 54 per cent of the total registered voters in this constituency. Therefore, I am applying a two-pronged campaign strategy by balancing digital and physical methods," he said. Mohd Fakharuddin will face a three-cornered fight in the Pasir Raja state seat, which has 29,818 registered voters, going up against Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba and Yuhanita Yunan of Perikatan Nasional (PN). Burial issue: MAIS holds immediate meeting of parties involved

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) has ordered an immediate meeting between the heirs; the management of the Nurul Hidayah Mosque, Kampung Pandan Dalam; the Salatulrahim Welfare Agency (BKS) and the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) to resolve the issue of alleged delays in the burial of a body, recently. MAIS chairman Datuk Salehuddin Saidin said the move was to achieve the best solution for all parties involved, as well as to ensure that similar incidents do not occur again in the future. "MAIS expresses its condolences to the bereaved families involved in the alleged delay in the burial of the body at the Ukay Perdana Islamic Cemetery, Hulu Klang and expresses its sorrow for the incident that occurred to the bereaved families at a time when they lost their loved ones. "MAIS guarantees that all findings from the police investigation, whether from the aspect of crime, negligence or misunderstanding of communication between the parties involved, will be taken to take appropriate action against any party responsible," he said in a statement today. Salehuddin said MAIS took note of the media statement issued by JAIS Director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad last Saturday regarding the results of the initial investigation based on information from the mosque management regarding the incident. 13 injured in a 5.5 magnitude earthquake in Sichuan

CHENGDU, CHINA: A total of 13 people were slightly injured as of 3.30 am Monday after an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck Gaoxian County in Yibin City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, Xinhua reported, citing local authorities. All the injured victims were sent to hospital for treatment, while another 196 residents were evacuated to a safe location. According to the Yibin earthquake relief operation headquarters, relief and recovery efforts are being carried out in an orderly manner. The earthquake occurred at 12.12 midnight Monday Beijing time. According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the epicenter was detected at a position of 28.50 degrees north and 104.69 degrees east, with a depth of six kilometers. Ringgit opens higher against US dollar, supported by low oil prices

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar on Monday as the local currency continued to receive good support from low crude oil prices. At 8am, the local currency was at 4.0855/0950 against the US dollar from 4.0860/0910 at the close last Friday. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd Chief Economist, Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid, said that West Texas Intermediate and Brent crude oil prices were at US$69.87 per barrel and US$72.46 per barrel, respectively, while the United States (US) and Iran were expected to continue their negotiations. “Ships continuing to pass through the Strait of Hormuz shows that the oil shortage could be resolved soon. "In this regard, the US dollar/ringgit is expected to be at RM4.08 to RM4.10 today," he told Bernama. In the opening session, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the pound to 5.3929/4054 from 5.4013/4079 at last Friday's close, rose against the euro to 4.6526/6634 from 4.6605/6662 and rose against the Japanese yen to 2.5258/5318 from 2.5283/5316 previously. The local currency traded mixed against regional currencies. Red eagle worth RM20,000 among wildlife seized in Tumpat

KOTA BHARU: A red eagle worth RM20,000 was among the wildlife seized in a raid carried out by the Southeast Brigade General Operations Force (PGA) together with the Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) in Kampung Bunohan, Tumpat, on Sunday. PGA Southeast Brigade Commander, SAC Ahmad Radzi Hussain said that in the raid at 3.15 pm, his party also arrested an 18-year-old man and seized several protected wildlife and cages with a total value of RM48,500. He said that an inspection of the house found a red eagle, four ruak-ruak birds, a short-eared owl, two pandanus civets and five cages. "The investigation found that the suspect failed to produce any valid license or permit to keep the protected wildlife before being detained for further action," he said in a statement. According to him, the suspect along with all the confiscated items have been handed over to Kelantan Perhilitan for further investigation under Section 60 of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716). KUALA LUMPUR: Six students at the MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) in Johor who are suspected of being involved in a bullying case face expulsion from the institution if found guilty of the act. Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) chairman Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said that following the latest case report, he had instructed the MARA Secondary Education Division (BPM) and the MRSM administration to immediately hold a College Disciplinary Committee (JDM) meeting. "A JDM meeting must be held immediately within 24 hours to conduct an investigation and take the strictest action against students found to be involved. If proven guilty, they must be expelled from MRSM." BUDI MADANI receives more than 18,000 applications for additional diesel quotas

PETALING JAYA: The official BUDI MADANI portal has received more than 18,000 applications for an additional 100 litres of subsidised diesel quota per month from eligible owners of diesel pickup and jeep vehicles as of 10pm last night. Finance Minister II, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said that the initial implementation of BUDI MADANI Diesel (BUDI Diesel), which entered its second day, went smoothly without any technical problems. He said that so far, more than 40,000 transactions have been recorded involving users who have taken advantage of the initiative since it was implemented on Saturday. He said this to reporters after reviewing the initial implementation of BUDI Diesel at the Petronas NKVE Petrol Station towards Damansara. Also present was the Secretary-General of the Treasury, Tan Sri Johan Mahmood Merican. Amir Hamzah said that applications for additional quotas can be made online through the official BUDI MADANI portal, while individuals who need assistance can seek the services of officers at the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) offices, the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) as well as counters provided by several oil companies. He said the government also provides facilities to transfer subsidy quotas to actual users if the registered owner of the vehicle is different from the individual using the vehicle. According to him, after the transfer is made, verification at the petrol station will be carried out through the user's identity card number linked to the quota in question. "The quota will be assigned to the new user's identity card number. So when used at a petrol station, the system will identify that the quota has been transferred." "However, the total quota remains based on vehicles and it can only be used by designated individuals," he said.
