KUALA LUMPUR, October 11, 2026,  The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating an individual over a Facebook post suspected of insulting Islam by allegedly mocking a Quranic verse.

In a statement, MCMC said the content involved the use of the word “lighad”, referring to verse 18 of Surah al-Hashr, during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Budget 2027 speech on Friday.

The commission said the post had allegedly ridiculed a Quranic verse, raising public concern.

MCMC has recorded a statement from the individual to assist its investigation and seized a mobile phone and an eSIM for forensic analysis.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.

MCMC reminded social media users to exercise freedom of expression responsibly while respecting religious sensitivities and maintaining harmony in Malaysia’s multiracial and multireligious society.
