HKEX Launches New AI and Semiconductor Indices

HONG KONG, October 23, 2026 — Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) has launched two new indices to track companies in artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors.

The new indices will help investors follow the performance of Hong Kong-listed technology companies. HKEX also signed an agreement with China Southern Asset Management to develop an investment fund based on its new AI index for mainland Chinese investors.

The fund’s launch date has not yet been announced.

New AI Index Tracks 40 Companies

The HKEX Artificial Intelligence Index tracks 40 Hong Kong-listed companies involved in the AI industry.

These companies work in areas such as AI chips, data centres, computer systems, AI models and software.

The index also considers how much companies invest in AI research and development. This helps identify businesses that are actively developing AI technology.

The index gives investors a way to monitor the performance of companies across different parts of the AI industry.

Semiconductor Index Covers 30 Companies

HKEX has also introduced the HKEX Semiconductor Index.

It tracks the 30 largest semiconductor-related companies listed in Hong Kong.

These businesses include chipmakers and companies that produce semiconductor equipment, electronic components, computer hardware and storage products.

Semiconductors are essential to many modern technologies, including smartphones, computers, data centres and AI systems.

The new index will allow investors to follow the performance of Hong Kong’s semiconductor sector more closely.

AI Investment Fund Planned for Mainland China

HKEX has signed a licensing agreement with China Southern Asset Management to develop an exchange-traded fund (ETF) based on the AI index.

An ETF is an investment fund that can be bought and sold on a stock exchange. It allows investors to gain exposure to a group of companies through a single product.

The planned fund would give mainland Chinese investors another way to invest in companies linked to Hong Kong’s AI industry.

However, the launch date and other details have not yet been confirmed.

HKEX Expands Its Technology Focus

HKEX said AI and semiconductors are becoming increasingly important to global innovation and economic growth.

Richard Leung, HKEX’s Group Chief Information Officer, said the exchange would continue to develop more indices to help investors follow emerging technology trends.

The two new indices expand HKEX’s range of investment benchmarks and could support the development of more technology-focused financial products.

However, an index does not guarantee investment returns. The value of related investments can rise or fall depending on company performance and market conditions.
