YB Yuneswaran Welcomes MADANI Government’s FELDA Commitment, Calls for Greater Focus on Future Generations

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — R. Yuneswaran has welcomed the MADANI Government's continued commitment to strengthening Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA), describing recent initiatives announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as a clear demonstration of the government's determination to restore confidence among more than 100,000 FELDA settler families nationwide. In a statement, Yuneswaran said the government inherited a FELDA burdened by significant financial challenges, including heavy debt, governance weaknesses and the impact of past decisions that affected the institution's financial position. He said instead of allowing those issues to persist, the MADANI Government had chosen to take responsibility by implementing the FELDA Recovery Plan, which allocates RM990 million annually from 2023 to meet FELDA's financial commitments. According to Yuneswaran, nearly RM3.96 billion has already been channelled under the plan, while the government's total commitment amounts to RM9.9 billion over a 10-year period. He noted that although the funds could have been used for other public infrastructure such as schools, hospitals and roads, the government prioritised ensuring FELDA's financial stability and protecting the welfare of settlers. However, Yuneswaran stressed that FELDA's transformation should go beyond resolving its financial obligations, urging the government to place greater emphasis on the needs of second- and third-generation settlers. He identified key challenges facing younger FELDA communities, including the shortage of affordable housing, limited access to residential land, insufficient quality employment opportunities and the need for greater exposure to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence (AI) and the digital economy. As the Member of Parliament for Segamat, Yuneswaran said the issue is particularly important because several FELDA settlements in the constituency have played a significant role in the district's economic development over the years. He proposed several measures, including accelerating housing projects for second-generation settlers, improving residential land ownership policies, attracting more investments and downstream industries into FELDA areas, expanding TVET and digital skills training, and strengthening infrastructure, internet connectivity and public amenities. Yuneswaran described FELDA as more than just a government agency, calling it a symbol of Malaysia's efforts to eradicate poverty, develop rural communities and build a strong Bumiputera middle class. He said the agenda to strengthen FELDA should transcend political differences and pledged to continue championing the interests of FELDA settlers to ensure the development of FELDA remains a national priority for the benefit of future generations and the country's continued progress. -- MINUTESMY

Understanding Algorithms Key To Delivering Credible News – Expert

KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 -- Algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) are not a threat to journalism but a new challenge that media organisations must understand to ensure credible news continues to reach the public. Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) Social Communication lecturer and Media and Information Psychological Warfare analyst, Dr Ahmad Sauffiyan Abu Hasan said media organisations should embrace the technology to expand the reach of accurate reporting and foster more positive public perceptions. “The challenge for the media today is understanding how algorithms work and how they can help widen the dissemination of news. “If credible news does not reach the public, that space will be filled by information that may not be accurate,” he said when appearing as a guest on Bernama TV’s Ruang Bicara programme titled ‘Berita sebagai Kompas Persepsi’ at Wisma Bernama last night. He said algorithms play a significant role in determining the content users receive based on their interactions on digital platforms. As such, media organisations need to strengthen their content strategies by incorporating visual elements, short videos and storytelling techniques that align with current algorithm trends. “We can no longer simply publish news on a website and leave it there. Media organisations need to distribute content more actively on social media using visuals and other tools so algorithms can deliver it to the intended audience,” he said. On the use of AI in journalism, Ahmad Sauffiyan said the technology could help streamline newsroom processes and improve efficiency. However, he cautioned against overreliance on AI, stressing that journalists must continue to exercise their own judgement. “AI can help, but we cannot hand everything over to technology. Decisions and assessments must still come from journalists,” he said. MARA TVET achieves almost 100 percent marketability – DPM Ahmad Zahid

PUTRAJAYA: A total of 270 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions under the People's Trust Council (MARA) recorded a graduate employability rate of approximately 99.5 percent, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He, who is also the Chairman of the National TVET Council, said that this proud achievement proves that MARA TVET institutions are at the forefront of making the national TVET agenda a success, which is now entering the TVET 2.0 phase. "I also really appreciate that the private sector has been at the forefront of supporting TVET across the country by offering not only new modules but also providing equipment, tools and machinery for certain TVET institutions. "They are welcoming TVET 2.0 not only with the various contributions that I mentioned earlier, but they have also signed an agreement with the National TVET Council and most TVET institutions in Malaysia, that all TVET students will be employed by this industry, 100 percent absorbed into the industry," he said when speaking at the National TVET Day 2026 celebration, here, today. The National TVET 2026 celebration was held at Dataran Putrajaya here, with the opening ceremony and launch of TVET 2.0 officiated by Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the implementation of TVET 2.0 will focus more on new fields that have high marketability such as robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT) and renewable energy, without neglecting conventional fields that continue to be in demand. "In TVET 2.0, apart from the focus I have given, we have also sent teaching staff from certain TVET institutions abroad for free, not funded by the government but funded by the industry abroad for our teachers," he said. In addition, he said, the industry also offers premium salaries to TVET graduates, with a minimum salary of RM2,500 for those who complete the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) course, above the current minimum wage rate. He said the employability rate of TVET graduates nationwide had also increased to 98.7 percent at the end of May compared to 95.1 percent previously. "This is an achievement that we are grateful for and as I often say, achieving success is difficult but maintaining it is even more difficult. Our duty and responsibility is not only to maintain that success but also to continue to improve it," he said. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid said that students from tahfiz schools and pondok schools are now also given the opportunity to pursue TVET, including in aerospace engineering and maritime engineering through programmes offered by UniKL. "This will raise the level of maahad tahfiz students who have so far only focused on the fields of syariah and usuluddin. God willing, we will see in the next three to five years, apart from continuing to maintain memorization of the Quran, they will become engineers and be involved in aerospace," he said. He said the move is expected to produce more highly skilled professionals among tahfiz students without affecting their mastery in the field of religion. Ahmad Zahid also said that seven universities in the Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN) offer higher education pathways to TVET students up to master's and doctorate (PhD) levels. He said the government has allocated RM7.9 billion to the TVET sector through the 2026 Budget, which is the highest allocation ever given to strengthen the implementation of TVET 2.0, including skills enhancement and retraining programmes. Regarding the celebration of National TVET Day 2026, he said that this year's event was held on a relatively large scale despite the very low cost, thus reflecting the efficiency of resource management and the government's commitment in ensuring that high-impact programs can continue without burdening the country's expenses. Taking up the theme "TVET, the Top Career Choice", the National TVET Day 2026 celebration, for three days until Sunday, starting from 9 am to 10 pm, brings together more than 107 agencies, institutions, and industry players from nine major sectors on one stage, covering the fields of aerospace, electronics and digital, agriculture, transportation and automotive, advanced manufacturing, services, rail, maritime and the energy sectors. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) is on track to realise its aspiration to become a digital powerhouse by 2030 through its PWR 2030 strategy, in line with efforts to empower artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainability to drive long-term value creation for all stakeholders. In a statement today, updating information presented at its recent annual general meeting, the telecommunications company said it continues to strengthen its role as a coordinator of Malaysia's AI and digital ecosystem by developing the infrastructure, platforms and governance needed to support the wider adoption of AI. This includes AI-powered data centers, as well as AI-based solutions such as smart cities and smart urban forestry for enterprises, governments and large-scale global companies. Its Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Amar Huzaimi Md Deris said that to strengthen the way value is created, the company is enhancing its AI and digital innovation capabilities while embedding sustainability more deeply into its business, operations and strategic investments. This move also strengthens the company's ability to support the growing digital needs across businesses, communities and countries, he said. Internally, TM's adoption of AI is being accelerated through agentic AI contact centres, network modernisation and structured AI skills upgrading programmes for employees. On sustainability, TM said it is improving its sustainability framework in 2025 by adopting an approach that balances financial targets with environmental and social impacts.
