Anwar Urges Parents to Play a Stronger Role in Addressing Children’s Social Challenges

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged parents to take a more active role in raising their children amid growing concerns about negative social influences, including drug abuse.

He said parents should not leave the responsibility of guiding children entirely to schools or the government. Instead, families must remain closely involved in their children’s daily lives, behaviour and development.

Anwar made the remarks after Friday prayers at Al-Muqarrabin Mosque in Bandar Tasik Selatan today. He also interacted with schoolchildren following a Cabinet meeting that discussed mental health and autism.

Parents Urged to Monitor Children’s Daily Activities

Anwar said parents should pay closer attention to their children’s studies, homework, arrival times at home and friendship circles.

He warned that a lack of parental involvement could make it harder to identify problems early, including exposure to harmful influences or drug abuse.

The Prime Minister said public calls for government action should also be accompanied by a stronger commitment from parents to fulfil their responsibilities.

Families, Schools and Government Must Work Together

Anwar said mental health and autism were among the issues discussed during the Cabinet meeting.

He stressed that addressing challenges affecting children requires cooperation between parents, families, schools and the government.

While the government has an important role in supporting children and families, parents must remain directly involved in shaping their children’s values, behaviour and future.

He added that consistent guidance and support from families and institutions are essential to helping young people navigate social challenges.
