“No Compromise” on Drunk and Drug-Impaired Driving, Says Transport Minister

Putrajaya – The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has pledged zero tolerance for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs following a fatal accident in Klang that claimed the life of a man identified as Amirul Hafiz bin Omar.

Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook expressed condolences to the victim’s family, describing the incident as both tragic and unacceptable.

“The loss is deeply heartbreaking. Incidents like this not only take innocent lives but also constitute a form of criminal negligence that cannot be tolerated,” he said in a statement on Monday.

The fatal crash reportedly occurred along Jalan Raya Barat in Klang and involved a driver believed to have been under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Strict Legal Action

The ministry stressed that the government would not compromise in taking action against individuals who endanger others by driving while intoxicated.

Loke noted that amendments to relevant laws, which came into force in October 2020, provide for significantly harsher penalties against offenders.

Under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act 1987, individuals found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs resulting in death face imprisonment of between 10 and 15 years, along with fines ranging from RM50,000 to RM100,000.

Repeat offenders face even stricter punishment, including jail terms of between 15 and 20 years and fines of between RM100,000 and RM150,000.

Call for Swift Investigation

The ministry has urged the Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) to expedite a thorough investigation so that the case can be referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers for prosecution.

Loke also expressed hope that the courts would impose the maximum penalties if the accused is found guilty.

Proposed Legal Amendments

In addition, the ministry revealed that it is working on further amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 to require offenders to compensate victims’ families, on top of existing criminal penalties.

“The government remains committed to strengthening laws and enforcement to ensure the safety of all road users,” Loke said.
