KOTA KINABALU, September 15 2026, AirAsia will resume direct flight services connecting Kota Kinabalu with Bintulu and Sibu starting November 2026, following recent discussions with Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing.
The Kota Kinabalu–Bintulu route will restart on November 1, 2026, operating three times weekly. The Kota Kinabalu–Sibu route will resume on November 2, 2026, with four weekly flights. Both services will utilize Airbus A320 aircraft, with flight tickets made available for purchase since September 2.
Tiong stated that the resumption comes after engagements with AirAsia to address the need for stronger air connectivity between Sabah and Sarawak.
“Many people rely on these direct flights for work, education, business, tourism, medical needs, and family visits,” Tiong said.
“Without direct services, passengers may need to transit through other airports, resulting in longer travelling time and additional expenses. Therefore, I raised these concerns during my meeting with AirAsia and urged them to seriously consider restoring both routes. I welcome their positive response and decision to resume the services.”
He added that robust connectivity is crucial for economic activity, domestic tourism, and inter-state relations. The Kota Kinabalu–Bintulu link is expected to support Bintulu’s growth as an industrial hub, while the Kota Kinabalu–Sibu route will benefit travelers across central Sarawak.
Tiong further emphasized the importance of maintaining stable and reliable flight schedules to prevent disruptions for travelers, while urging AirAsia to maintain reasonable airfares to keep travel affordable. He affirmed that the ministry will continue discussions with airlines and relevant authorities to further improve regional aviation services.
