PUTRAJAYA, JULY 9 — Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on agricultural cooperation between Malaysia and Thailand, describing it as a major step towards enhancing regional food security and expanding bilateral collaboration in the agri-food sector.
The MoU was signed by Mohamad Sabu and Thailand’s Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Suriya Jungrungreangkit, during the official visit of Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to Malaysia.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Anutin, underscoring the commitment of both governments to deepen cooperation in agriculture and food security.
Mohamad said the agreement represents more than a formal document, describing it as a shared commitment to strengthen long-standing bilateral ties and promote sustainable development in the agricultural sector.
Under the MoU, Malaysia and Thailand will expand collaboration across a wide range of areas, including crop cultivation, livestock, fisheries, research and development (R&D), biosecurity, capacity building, sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures, as well as the trade and marketing of agricultural products.
He said the partnership would enable both countries to share expertise, address agricultural challenges more efficiently and enhance food security for the benefit of people in both nations.
Mohamad also highlighted the strong growth in agricultural trade between Malaysia and Thailand, noting that bilateral agricultural trade reached RM20.33 billion in 2025. He said the figure reflects the close relationship between the two countries and demonstrates the potential for further economic cooperation.
He added that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security will continue to pursue strategic partnerships with friendly nations to ensure a stable national food supply, strengthen the agri-food industry and safeguard the welfare of farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen.
According to Mohamad, such international collaborations are vital to building a more resilient food system while supporting the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of Malaysia’s agricultural sector.
