MASJID TANAH, October 28, 2026 — Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged BN and its political partners to set aside past differences and work together in the upcoming Melaka state election.
He said the cooperation reflects a new political landscape in the state, where parties that once opposed each other must now build mutual understanding.
“Previously, we were allergic to green, and they were allergic to blue,” Zahid said, referring to the colours associated with PAS and BN.
He made the remarks while launching BN’s election machinery for the Masjid Tanah parliamentary constituency.
BN and PAS Partners Agree to Work Together
Zahid said the new cooperation was based on ta fahum siyasi, or political understanding. He said both sides must accept their new partnership and work as one team during the campaign.
He also urged party workers to focus on the state election instead of bringing up past political disputes.
The nomination of candidates is scheduled for October 31, while polling for the Melaka state election will take place on November 14.
BN to Contest 21 State Seats
Zahid said the cooperation also covers the allocation of seats between the parties.
BN will contest 21 of Melaka’s 28 state assembly seats. The remaining seven seats have been allocated to PAS and its partners for them to negotiate among themselves.
He said the parties must respect the agreed arrangement and support one another in the constituencies they contest.
Focus on Defending Seats in Masjid Tanah
Zahid urged BN’s election machinery to concentrate on defending the seats it currently holds, including the 21 state seats won by the coalition in the previous election.
He also recalled that BN had lost the Masjid Tanah parliamentary seat by a majority of 4,411 votes in the last general election.
However, he said the immediate priority was to ensure that the new political cooperation translated into effective teamwork during the Melaka state election.
The partnership will test whether supporters from previously rival political camps can work together on the ground throughout the campaign.
