Johor State Election: Analysts Say PAS Takes Strategic Approach in Ties with Bersatu

PETALING JAYA, JULY 3 -- Political observers believe PAS is deliberately maintaining a calculated and flexible relationship with Bersatu, rather than fully breaking away from its Perikatan Nasional (PN) partner ahead of key state elections. According to The Asia Group’s Associate Vice President Asrul Sani, PAS appears to be balancing political messaging with electoral strategy. While the party has occasionally distanced itself rhetorically from Bersatu, it is not rushing into a formal split. “PAS is separating rhetoric from election strategy. They want the political benefits of distancing themselves from Bersatu without facing the full consequences of a complete break,” he said. Asrul added that PAS has become the dominant force within PN, with stronger grassroots machinery and electoral organisation, particularly in Malay-majority areas. However, Bersatu still plays an important role in attracting segments of Malay voters who may be reluctant to support PAS directly. “This makes Bersatu still useful in several seats, even though the relationship is increasingly strained,” he said. He noted that maintaining Bersatu as an ally also gives PAS flexibility to renegotiate political alignments after the Johor state election, ahead of the next general election. At a recent PAS Central Committee meeting, the party stopped short of making a firm decision on its ties with Bersatu, contrary to expectations that a clearer stance would be announced regarding cooperation within PN in Johor. Instead, PAS reiterated its focus on defending “Malay-Muslim political power” and urged voters not to support Pakatan Harapan (PH). Meanwhile, Singapore Institute of International Affairs analyst Oh Ei Sun said the PAS-Bersatu dynamic in Johor remains complex, especially given Bersatu’s stronger position in the southern state. He noted that Johor is the political base of Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, who previously served as menteri besar for nine years, making PAS more dependent on Bersatu’s ground strength in the state. “As a result, PAS cannot afford to alienate Bersatu before the election. Any major realignment is more likely to happen after the Johor polls,” he said. Oh added that a full break between PAS and Bersatu could split the Malay vote, potentially benefiting Barisan Nasional (BN) or Pakatan Harapan (PH). However, Asrul suggested that the true test of the PAS-Bersatu relationship may come in the Negeri Sembilan state election, where the National Vision Party led by Hamzah Zainudin is expected to make its debut. He said that if the new party manages to gain traction with PAS support, Bersatu could find itself sidelined within the opposition bloc. PAS considers contesting traditional DAP seats in Negeri Sembilan polls

PETALING JAYA, JUNE 22 -- The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party PAS has not ruled out contesting several seats traditionally held by the Democratic Action Party DAP in the upcoming Negeri Sembilan state election on Aug 1. Negeri Sembilan PAS chief Fairuz Isa said the party is preparing to contest more than 10 seats, similar to its strategy in the 2023 state election, while also aiming to defend the three seats it currently holds. He said final seat allocations will depend on negotiations with other political partners, especially in the event of continued cooperation within the opposition bloc. “There are parties willing to work with us, and during seat negotiations, we may face limited Malay-majority seats to contest,” he was quoted as saying in Seremban. He added that PAS is considering seats currently held by Pakatan Harapan and DAP where Malay voters make up about 40% of the electorate. Fairuz said the party’s candidate selection process is about 90% complete, with emphasis on integrity, service capability, and candidates aged below 60. He also urged party members and machinery to respect and accept any final decision made by the leadership. In the 2023 state election, the opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional won five of the 36 seats it contested. Within the coalition, PAS secured Paroi, Serting and Bagan Pinang, while Bersatu won Labu and Gemencheh. End of collaboration with Bersatu, PAS may leave or be expelled from PN – Analyst

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS is likely to leave or be expelled from the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition after deciding to end its collaboration with Bersatu, according to political analysts. Director of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Kuala Lumpur, Associate Professor Dr Mazlan Ali, said PAS cannot determine the direction of PN alone because the political coalition also includes Bersatu, Gerakan and the Malaysian Indian People's Party (MIPP). "PAS only represents one voice... since PAS has severed ties with Bersatu, there is a possibility that the three component parties in PN will decide to expel PAS, and the coalition is expected to be led by Bersatu President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin," he told Bernama. He said PAS was likely to form a new political alignment to face the next election, thus further breaking the opposition bloc. "We will see two opposition blocs ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16), namely PN led by Bersatu and another new alignment led by PAS," he said. Mazlan also said the split between PAS and Bersatu could potentially give an advantage to Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) if Malay support was no longer concentrated in one opposition coalition. Yesterday, PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang announced that the party had officially decided to end political cooperation with Bersatu after taking into account reports, studies and current assessments of the relationship between the two parties. Following the decision, Muhyiddin in a statement today announced that Bersatu, as the founding party of PN, will continue to remain in the coalition and strengthen the core of its struggle. Universiti Sains Malaysia's Centre for Social Sciences lecturer Professor Datuk Dr Sivamurugan Pandian said PAS and Bersatu were expected to face political repercussions following the decision, as well as major challenges in gaining voter support. He said Bersatu was expected to be more affected because it relied heavily on the strength of the PAS machinery and grassroots support. "However, PAS also faces the challenge of expanding its influence in mixed areas without the support of strategic partners," he said. BATU PAHAT: PAS's record of political cooperation shows that it will end in 'divorce', said Pakatan Harapan (PH) secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said the latest development regarding the cooperation between PAS and Bersatu was not unusual when viewed based on the political history of the parties. Saifuddin Nasution said PAS had formed collaborations with many parties including Semangat 46, PH, UMNO and Bersatu, but all of these collaborations ultimately did not last. "Anyone who joins him (PAS) ends up with divorce. The issue is single talaq or double talaq or triple talaq, that's all," he told reporters after the Home Minister's Citra Negara Program: Safe Schools at the Batu Pahat High Technology Training Centre (ADTEC) here, today. He said that although the reason often put forward by PAS is the unification of the ummah, the concept cannot be interpreted according to the wishes or interests of certain parties. Saifuddin Nasution said the true political principles of Islam are to uphold justice, call for goodness, prevent evil and instill love and unity among society. Meanwhile, he stressed that PH's strength does not depend on the division of its opponents, but rather is built through relationships based on trust and respect between its component parties. "We do not become strong because our opponents are divided. We become strong because we build our own strength. In PH, that strength is built through joint efforts and the principles of mutual trust and mutual respect," he said.
